(UPD — New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller moved into the key state of Oregon today and hoped for a warmer reception than the one he received in California for support of a possible presidential bid in 1960. Supporters of the 51-year-old Republican, who arrived here from San Francisco Friday night, were hopeful he would do better in Oregon than he did in California, the home state of his principal rival for the GOP nomination Vice President Richard M. Nixon. Republican Gov, Mark Hatfield of Oregon already has said that Rockefeller’s name will be on the ballot next year together with that of Vice President Richard M. Nixon. ——— — In California, a two-day tour convinced Rockefeller backers that the official Republican state party organization, at least, is solidly committed to Nixon in 1960-

Los Angeles County GOP Chairman Alphonzo E. Bell Jr. said that Rockefeller’s visit “didn’t change any positions” among gOP brass in Southern California. e added that Los Angeles party officials “probably are unanimous in their support of Dick Nixon.” i In San Francisco Friday, Rockefeller met with eight of the 10 GOP county chairmen in the bay area, plus a smattering of Republican congressmen and state legislators.

Robert H. Steele, chairman in San Francisco, summed it up by saying “We’ve always been pretty strong for Nixon in this territory but we did want to see Rocky, meet him and hear him.” Rockefeller made some headway in his meeting with the GOP officials in San Francisco. At least one county chairman said he thought a Nixon-Rockefeller contest would be a good thing because it would spur interest in the GOP throughout the nation. “I think if we have a cut-and-dried convention next year, we’re dead,” he said. (UPI) —Mamie Eisenhower celebrates her 63rd birthday today with every indication that her coming final year as first lady may be her happiest in the White House. Like many president’s wives before her, Mamie was rephrtgd to chaff at her official duties which; keep her from seeing her own friends and doing what she wishes. Friends in Washington say she won’t be unhappy when the restrictions end. But one White House intimate said, “they’ve never been able to push her around too much’’ to attend to official duties. For Example, if Mrs Eisenhower pays a visit to the Salvation Army one year, the next year she will go to the Red Cross, despite pleas from the two groups for an annual appearance at both. In addition, Mrs. Eisenhower, with the President’s willing assent has trimmed formal White House entertaining to a bare minimum. Another indication of how Mrs. Eisenhower draws the line on official duties when they interfere with personal wishes is her decision not to accompany the President on his forthcoming 10-nation good will tour. Officially it has been indicated that the hectic pace of the tour would be too rugged for what doctors term her “somewhat delicate” health. But the first lady’s desire to stay elose to her ailing mother in Denver, Colo., also
