First Snow Blanket Os Season In State United Press International The season’s first blanket of snow lay across a northern strip of Indiana today on the outer edge erf a wintry stArm that, spawned a blizzard in the West. Four inches of snow was measured at South Bend and three inches at Fort Wayne and Goshen. Lafayette had an inch. Driving hazards developed as the snow fell and fog, light rain and freezing drizzle cast a gloomy and view-obscuring pall over the entire state. The southern two-thirds of the state missed the snow and icy drizzle because temperatures stayed above freezing. The rain was expected to continue today and tonight, probably mixed with snow in the north, and snow flurries were expected throughout the state Saturday in the wake of colder temperatures. The five-day outlook called for temperatures averaging near 10 degrees below normal highs of 43 to 56 and normal lows of 27 to 40. The coldest part of the period was expected to be the weekend, with a warming trend developing about Monday or Tuesday. Forecasts called for precipitation totaling one-half of an inch during the five days ending next Wednesday, in the form of rain changing to snow tonight and early Saturday and some rain or snow likely again Monday or Tuesday. Temperatures ranged srom 32 to 58 at their high points Thursday. Lafayette getting the coldest maximum and Evansville the warmest. Overnight lows included 23 at Lafayette, 27 at South Bend, 29 at Goshen, and 32 at Fort Wayne. Other lows were above freezing, including 35 at Indianapolis, 55 at Evansville. Highs today will range from 35 j to 63, lows tonight from 32 to 45. i and highs Saturday from 34 to 49. 1
