Chicago Bears Favorites To Defeat Frisco By EARL WRIGHT United Press International The Chicago Bears are favored to tighten Up the National Football League’s Western Division race Sunday by defeating the San Francisco Forty-Niners at Chica- . go’s Wrigley Field. San Francisco (6-1) _is a twopoint underdog although it leads the Western Division by two games while the Bears’ (3-4) are tied for third with the Green Bay Packers. The second-place Baltimore Colts (4-3) are 9% point favorites to whip the Packers at Milwaukee. The New York Giants (6-1) are 2% point choices to protect their one-game Eastern lead over the Cleveland Browns (5-2) by downing the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-4-1) at Yankee Stadium. The Browns are 7% point favorites for their game with the Redskins (3-4) at Washington. Eagles Over Cardinals The Eagles (4-3) are four-point choices to down the Chicago Cardinals (2-5) at Philadelphia. In Sunday’s other game, the Los Angeles Rams (2-5) are 2% point choices to defeat the Lions (<-5-1) at Detroit. The Bears entertain the FortyNiner team that edged them last month at San Francisco, 20-17, when R. C Owens leaped and caught Y. A. Tittle’s 46-yard pass in the end zone with 61 seconds to go. The Forty-Niners have won four in a row while the Bears won their last two starts. Baltimore lost to the Browns and Redskins in its last two games and must bounce back quickly to retain the Western Division title and a chance to defend its league crown in the championship game. The Colts tackle a Green Bay team that has lost four straight since winning its first three games, The Packers bowed at Baltimore last month, 38-21. Giant Quarterbacks Ready Charley Conerly and George Shaw, New York’s top quarterbacks. are nursing injuries but may recover sufficiently to play against Pittsburgh. The Giants were ‘fortunate to gain a 21-16 vic- ■ lory "last month at Pittsburgh. The Giants have won their last ' five games, the league’s longest current victory string. Washington probably did coach ’ Paul Brown a favor by defeating Baltimore last Sunday. That upset should help get his Browns in a serious mood for a Redskin team they downed at Cleveland, . 34-7. Don Bosseler, Washington’s fullback, is injured. The Eagles entertain a Cardinal team they edged earlier in the season, 28-24, after trailing 24-0 in the third period. The Rams-Lions clash also is a return match. The Lions upset the Rams , at Los Angeles, 17-7. i Tug Wilson Backs Up Game Officials CHICAGO (UPD—lndiana foot- ‘ ball coach Phil Dickens received little sympathy from Big Ten > Commissioner Kenneth L. (Tug) Wilson Tuesday concerning Indi1 ana’s complaint that they were “robbed” of a touchdown in the ’ Ohio State -game last Saturday. Wilson backed up the officials ’ who ruled that Hoosier fullback ’ Vic Jones did not cross the goal 1 line with the ball in the second ’ period. The game was played to a scoreless tie. However, Dickens said his movies showed “without a shadow i of doubt” that Jones made it into ] the end zone, and earlier referred • to the officiating as “sickening.” [ “Nothing I have seen,” Wilson i told the football writers meeting, “would make me think the officials didn’t make the right call. .“I was interested in the pictures to see whether the officials 1 were in the proper position,” skid ! Wilson. "And they were. Right on i the goal line and in the best posi- ! tion to judge ” i Wilson said the camera was high over the field and 30 yards from the goal line, thus presenting a distorted angle. He added that I he had studied “a dozen still pic--1 tures” of the disputed play and ! would look at film clips later. But the commissioner pointed J out that he could do nothing about > the incident, anyway, regardless ' of what the pictures showed.

Hugh O'Brian May Be In Broadway Musical By VERNON SCOTT HOLLY WOOD (UPI) H ere’sb CPI Hollywood Correspondent f HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Here’s an unusual bit of hews: Hugh (Wyatt Earp) O’Brian is a good bet to replace Robert Preston this winter in Broadway’s sensational hit “Music Man.” “Hugh O’Brian?” you ask incredulously. "Yep,” says Hugh. "Me.” Believe it or not, there was a time when the rugged horse opera hero was sort of a male Jayne Mansfield. He posed for beefcake publicity pictures, dated starlets and couldn’t find work. Acted In Little Theater To fill his spare time, the trapjawed muscle-bound O’Brian acted in little theater projects looking for the big break. When the “Earp” series came along Hugh hopped in the saddle and rode off to glory. But now, after five years of wearing a tin badge, the lustre has dimmed and Hugh pines for the stage and New York’s bright lights. • He puts it this way, “I’m tired of saddles and sweat. I think a little satin, sex and sophistication would be mighty nice for a change. “Sure, the critics and audiences have a temptation to make fun of western actors. But just because a guy stars in an action series doesn’t mean he has limited acting ability. Turns Down Producers "New York have approached me many times to do Broadway shows, but I’ve turned them down.” "I still have two years to go on my “Earp” series and once the contract runs out I’ll be be ready to head east for a musical or comedy.” Then how come you might do “Music Man” this winter? Hugh? “Because I will have six months off between the first show of next season and the last show this season,” he explained. “Preston is expected to take off for six months — between Dec. 17 and July 4 _ which is exactly the time I will have off myself.” Wade Walker Named To Coach South Stars MIAMI (UPI) — Wade. Walker, Mississippi State head coach, will direct the South squad in the 14th annual North-South College AllStar Game in the Orange Bowl Dec. 26. Army Coach Dale Hall will coach the North team.
