Seltenright urges all farmers in Adams county who will have seed to sell or sow next spring to get the seed tested during the fall or early winter. Seltenright offers help to farmers in this testing program by supplying instructions for drawing samples and special seed envelopes for sending them to the state seed laboratory at Purdue for a free test as well as by furnishing information on other seed matters. See that is advertised for sale by farmers is required to be tested and tagged and all seeds must be free of prohibited noxious weed seeds and must not contain excessive amounts of other weed seeds to be legally sold. Since the test is free, all farmers should take advantage of this service, Seltenright said. The tendency of farmers to postpone sending samples to Purdue until just before planting time usually results in a congestion of samples in the laboratory in February and March. Anticipating seed testing requirements and sending samples early is recommended. Care should be exercised in seeing that the sample is representative of the lot and is large enough for test. A tea cupful of clover and grass seed and at least a pint of soybean or cereal seed should be submitted. , Wife Is Killed In fast Draw Contest RIDGEVILLE, Ind. (UPD—Police said today they were convinced that the gun death of Mrs. Janice M. Woofers, 24, in a “fast draw” contest with her husband was accidental. Mrs. Woofers fell dead in her home Thursday from a bullet above her heart, which her husband. Robert, 29, said he fired as the couple played a game to see who could draw a gun the fastest. Sheriff Gilbert Roberson said woofers was using a real revolver and Mrs. Woofers was “firing” a toy cap pistol. The shooting occurred while two of the couple’s four children were in the house, one of them 7 months and the other 16 months old. Two older children, 4 and 5 years old, were not there at the time. Woofers told Roberson that they had played the “fast draw” game earier in the afternoon, and Woofers interrupted the game to go outdoors and shoot at birds in the yard. He said he forgot the gun was loaded when he returned to the house and resumed the game with his wife. The bullet struck Mrs. Woofers in the chest just above the heart and severed an artery. She was dead on arrival at Randolph County Hospital in Winchester. Authorities said Woofers tried to help his wife to the family car to seek medical help but she collapsed a few minutes after the shooting. Woofers was jailed on an open charge at Randolph County Jail in Winchester pending a conference by the sheriff, prosecutor and coroner and an investigation by a grand jury. Authorities said Woofers was a fanatic on “fast drawing.” They said he had a cowboy holster and belt and other wearing apparel in the manner of TV cowboy stars. They said Woofer and Mrs. Wooter practiced drawing guns almost daily and that Woofer had taught his two eldest children the art.

Compromise On Bank Savings Interest Rate INDIANAPOLIS (UPD - The State Board of Financial Institutions effected a compromise Thursday and raised the bank interest rate ceiling on passbook savings by one-half of one per cent. The new 2% per cent rate, which is permissive rather than mandatory, is effective Jan. 1. Indications were that hundreds of banks would retain the old 2 per cent rate, especially in smaller communities where there is little or no competition for the depositors dollar. The board’s action came after a stormy public hearing on the matter in the Statehouse. Several times the heaving erupted into heated debate as bankers representing both sides of the issue clashed. The board split 4-2 against a 3 per cent ceiling. Moments later, the compromise 2% per cent ceiling was agreed upon by a 5-1 vote. Blaine H. Wiseman, Corydon banker and board chairman, was the lone holdout. He said he favored the 3 per cent ceiling. “Banks Cannot Compete’’ “The rate should be raised to 3 per cent,” Wiseman said. "Banks cannot compete with other lending institutions who can offer 3% and even 4 per cent to depositors.” The board also voted to raise the ceiling on six-month deposit certificates to 3 per cent and retained the present 2 per cent rate on 90-day to 6-month certificates. Regulations on interest payments also were liberalized to allow banks to pay depositors interest on money deposited during the first 10 days of any month. Under existing rules, immediate interest is paid during the “interest paying” months, January and June. More than 100 bankers wete present at the public hearing- Debate was marked by sharp disagreement on whether a 2 per cent ceiling on passbook savings was a factor in declining savings accounts. Ten Gary banks “lost nothing to Chicago banks when they upped their passbook rate to 3 per cent,” according to Joseph Schuster, Gary banker. I Schuster, who said he represented the 10 Gary banks at the hearing, said “banks should do a better job of merchandising savings deposits before they clamor for a rate Increase.” Got New Depositors William P. Murray, president of Mercantile National Bank of Hammond, said his bank’s Illinois tfranch made great strides in new depositors when their interest rate went to 3 per cent. Another proponent of a raise to 3 per cent was Frank M. McHale, Logansport banker and corporation attorney.
McHale, former Democratic national committeeman from Indiana, said banks were losing depositors to savings institutions which paid higher rates. McHale later engaged in a heated verbal exchange with Terre Haute banker George O. Nichols, a member of the state board, who accused McHale of
Questionnaires Are Mailed To Farmers Questionaires for the 1959 census of agriculture are now in the mail and will be in the hands of local farmers within a few days, it was announced today by field director John E. Tharaldson of the census bureau’s regional office at Detroit. The farm census questionaires are being mailed from Chicago, 111.. with the distribution timed so that the report forms will reach farmers about a week ahead of the date when census takers will begin the field canvass. The advance mailing is for the purpose of giving farm operators time to consult their records before filling in the answers required by the questionaires and geting them ready for the census takers to pick up. This procedure is designed to insure greater accuracy of reorting and to save time both for the farmer and the census taker when the latter calls at the farm. The 1959 census of agriculture questionaires is designed to provide information of the number and size of farms, acreage and harvest of crops, livestock production and inventories, selected farm facilities and equipment, selected farm expenditures, farm values, and mortgage debt. On the average, each farmer is asked about 100 questions, many of which can be answered by simply checking “yes” or “no”. Young Farmers Class At Adams Central A young farmers class will be held at Adams Central high school Monday at 7:30 p.m., Martin Watson, agriculture instructor, announced today. A man from Central Soya will be present to discuss the feeding of livestock and to show a film on this topic. All young farmers in the Adams Central area are especially invited to attend. Band Os Invaders Routed In Nicaragua MANAGUA, Nicaragua (UPD— Nicaraguan national guardsmen routed a band of invaders from Honduras, killing or capturing 14, including five Cubans, it was announced Thursday night. The communique issued by the national guard did not say when or where the reported clash took place. It said the governmnt forces killed two Cubans, one Honduran and one Salvadoran. Another Cuban was wounded but escaped, the national guard said. “political blackmail.” At present, Indiana’s 2 per cent ceiling on passbook savings is the lowest in the nation. All other states have a 3 per cent ceiling, the maximum allowed by the federal government. The board rejected appeals to raise the rate last summer, but was forced to reconsider the question at the insistence of Governor Handley.
