About Our Comics Several people have asked us during the past few days why we have dropped our two former comics, and added Alley Oop and Captain Easy. Until the first of the month we were buying our comics, feature material, and national photo-mat service from an agency, which, for the purpose of discussion, we can call “A”. . Several weeks ago, “A” notified us that there would be a rate increase which would substantially raise our production costs. The usual reason—their production costs were rising—was given. We decided that good, old-fashioned Jeffersonian competition was needed. So we looked around to see what was offered by other services. We discovered that agency “B” would give us a better deal. Therefore, our news pictures now have a small NEA in the corner, representing the service from which we now buy. One of the unfortunate things about the change is tha tthe comics change right in the middle of a story. This makes it difficult to get new readership, and loses the interest of the readers in them. We hope that the readers will appreciate the fact that we are trying to keep the costs of production down enough to put up with the change. The alternative would be to raise the subscription price. All businesses face the squeeze between rising costs of production and distribution, and their customers. We want to give the customers a break. What, besides a newspaper, is delivered right to your doorstep regularly six days a week, so that you can read and understand it at your leisure, with all of your community news in it, for just 30 cents a week? A recent study by the Indiana university department of journalism showed another interesting fact— The Decatur Daily Democrat contains two and one half times as much local news as the average home-town daily, and more than any other daily of its size in the test. We hope the readers appreciate the sincere attempt we make to provide as much of the day’s news as we can gather. We deeply appreciate your aid in calling in locals, ideas for features, out-of-town births, accidents, and deaths, and all society items. Remember, if you have a party or celebration, we will be glad to write it up in our society column. It costs nothing to place a story in the newspaper.

4 ig B . ; H Hr The Serenaders male quartet, of Chicago, of radio and television fame, will present a concert in the Decatur Youth and Community Center, under the auspices of the Adams County Mivic Music Association, Thursday, Nov. 19. One music critic recently wrote of their appearance in an open air concert with "press-agent” enthusiasm: "To lovers of quartet music, nothing quite can compare with the rich, luscious harmony conjured up by four well-matched male voices. Hie Serenaders are four highly skilled specialists, each a soloist of some distinction in his own right. They have accomplished much in the perfect blending of their voices.” The 1959-60 concert series of the Adams County Civic Music Association is open to members only, who joined during the annual enrollment week last spring. However, any person who has moved into the community within the last few months is welcome to join the organization and enjoy the five excellent concerts during the winter season. Interested persons are requested to contact Mrs. Roy Kalver. phone 3-3326 Decatur. Season tickets are $7.50 for adults and $4.00 for students.

First Snowfall Os Season In Indiana United Press International Temperatures plunged up to 46 degrees in a matter of hours, and blustery wintry weather with snow flurries and sub-freezing cold paid its first visit of the season to Indiana. Forecasts called for temperatures as low as 16 above zero tonight. Light snow fell over the northern two-thirds of the state Thursday night and today. It created temporary slippery-spot hazards on highways in the extreme northwest corner of the state, but the Indiana State Highway Department reported the spots didn’t last long and had been eliminated by mid-morning The mercury completed an 18hour drop from near 80 into the 20s around dawn, when readings from one end of the state to the other showed freezing or colder. It was 26 at Chicago, 27 at South Bend, Indianapolis and Lafayette, 28 at Goshen and Terre Haute, 29 at Evansville and Fort Wayne, 31 at Cincinnati and 32 at Louisville. Highs Thursday ranged up to 79 at Louisville, with Cincinnati recording 75, Indianapolis 71, Fort Wayne 69 and South Bend 60. At 8 .m. c.d.t., the Weather Bureau said light snow was faling at Golshen, South Bend, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Indianapois and Fort Wayne. The snow flurries were scheduled to continue throughout the day, stretching into the southern extremes of the state and en4ing tonight. Clearing weather and “hard freezing temperatures” were predicted for tonight, with the mercury dropping as low as 16 to 23 north and central and 18 to 25 south. Those would be considerably lower than any temperatures recorded since last spring. Highs today will range from 28 to 40, and highs Saturday from 35 to 45. Further slowly rising temperatures were expected Sunday. and the five-day outlook indicated that the moderation would continue until somewhat colder readings returned Tuesday or Wednesday.
