The Whole Truth Several times this year we have written editorials on tax rates. It is important that all of us understand tax rates, and their effect on the pocketbook. Regardless of political party, the tax rate strikes us all. Recently one political party has publicized the tax rate of one year of its last four years in public office, and compared it with four years of the other party. It is only fair that Decatur voters look at the whole picture, and see the rates for the three years omitted: 1952— $1.52 ) 1956—51.28 1953— 1.61 ) omitted 1957 — 1.41 1954— 1.54 ) / . 1958— 1.43 1955— 1.39 1959— 1.45 The first column shows the last Doan-Gage-Kolter administration civil city tax record—the budgets they established. The second column, 1955-9, shows the Cole-Aumann-Gerber-Kohne-Drake record. Any party can tax at a high rate for three years, build up the general fund, and then drop the rate for an election year. That’s not management, it is manipulation. • • • • DEMOCRATIC CITY CANDIDATES For Mayor Robert D. Farm Income Lowest Since During 1940 WASHINGTON iUPD—Republicans looking toward next year’s elections got a jolt of bad news from a new government report showing farmers’ real income at the lowest level since before World War 11. The sharpest drop was in the prices of crops important to the Midwest corn belt where Democrats already have made inroads into traditionally, Rep übli ca n areas. The report, which showed prices received by farmers for crops and livestock dropped nearly 1 2-3 per cent in the month ended Oct. 15, was sure to stir new discontent over the farm policies of President Eisenhower and Agriculture Secretary Ezra T. Benson. • Corn prices are at the lowest point since 1942. With a record crop piling up in storage bins. Democrats seemed certain to renew their criticism of the Eisen-

hower administration’s new no-production-controls corn programHie Agriculture Department’s monthly farm price reports, issued Friday, showed returns to farmers in mid-October averaged 79 per cent of the “fair income” parity price, the lowest sir.e August, 1940. This compared with 80 per cent of parity in mid-Sep-tember and 85 per cent in midOctober a year ago. One hundred per cent of parity is the theoretical price needed to put the value of commodities farmers sell on a par with the cost of things they must buy. Some decline in farm prices is considered normal at this time of year because October is close to the peak of the fall harvest period in many areas. Local Man's Sister Dies In Nebraska Clyde Vandertook, 904 North Second streeet, received word Friday afternoon of the death of his sister, Mrs. Paul Wheaton, of Omaha, Neb. She had been seriously ill for some time. Surviving in addition to the brother here are two other brothers and seven sisters, all of whom live in Nebraska. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Smoother Carpets If a carpet has rolled up or become uneven along an edge, place a few sheets of paper under the spot to protect the floor while you wet the rolled or uneveen section of the carpet with water. As it dries, the carpet will hug the floor and lie straight.
NOTES FROM AFTER THIRTY
By JACK HELLE* ILL This column will be short this week—Thursday is usually the day we write the topics from our notes, and Thursday we got sick, sick, sick. - SILENCE It's almost a shame the way children grow up now days—they are positive that every knob that turns or button that can be pushed turns something on or off. The other night, I was in the den making terrible noises with my guitar. In fact, the noises were so terrible I though maybe it needed tuning. So, I quit playing and reached up to adjust one of the tuning knobs. Our three-year-old daughter had been watching with interest while Daddy made more noise than the kids. When I twisted the knob, she asked, “why you turned it off, Daddy?” THE BIG PAYOFF John Eichhorn, jeweler at Ferris Bowers, got quite a surprise the other day when one of the customers brought in a $5 payment. No, not that be- brought in the payment, but the way he brought it in—a big quart jar full of pennies. “There’s $5 in here,” he told John, who replied, “I believe you!” At the bank John learned he was the winner—there was actually $5.01 in the jar! 800 Fourteen years ago this evening a friend and I pulled a clever Halloween stunt. We were living in Fort Wayne at the time, and the friend and I picked a place on Rudisill Blvd, that was lit by only one street light. We waited until a single car approached at a slow rate of speed. Then I started
Audrey Hepburn has the title role in “The Nun’s Story,” the picturization of the gripping bestseller, which has been filmed in Technicolor in Italy, Belgium and in African Congo. The production, playing at the Adams theater Sun. Mon. Tues, tells the story of a beautiful, young girl who becomes a nursing nun in the jungles of Africa, and then leaves the convent forever. Others in the large cast are Peter Finch, Dean Jagger, Mildred Dunnock and Barbara O'Neil. across the street at a normal rate of speed. The friend was wearing a trench coat, and a beat-up hat. He limped out in the street after me, swung a big club, and I fell to the street. The car that was approaching picked up speed, came to where I lay in the street, and stopped. I was ready to jump up and ask them what was wrong, and looked up at the car. The first and last thing I saw was a big star on the side, and some writing that said City Police. I was last seen heading north at a high rate of speed, trying to catch my friend. Kerosene Try pouring kerosene down the drain before sending for the plumber to correct the stoppage. It may save you inconvenience, and also a bill.
