-: ...A- l: b-d-. Checking Weight Os Hogs Urged LAFAYETTE, Ind.-H o o'si e r farmers who do not periodically check weigh their hogs are missing a bet. That’s a tip from Purdue University animal scientists, who say the true value of livestock is , often misjudged by swine growers relying on guesswork instead of accurate scales. Animal scientist Dick Hollandbeck advises hog farmers to check weight at least four times—birth, weaning, 135 days and just prior to marketing. A farmer doesn’t need elaborate scales, he adds, Baby scales, no longer needed in the home, work fine for checking birthweights. Some farmers use poultry scales, or smal hand spring scales for this job. To take weaning weights, swinemen will find useful a portable scale, such as a bathroom or milk scale that has a bucket or live poultry scoop hooked underneath. Don’t forget, says the specialist, that weaning weights are a valuable guide in the culling of old sows and in the selection of replacement gilts. The 21 and 35-day weaning weights will give farmers the measure of the milking ability of the brood sow, while the 56-day .weaning weights figure in both the sow's milking ability and the creep feed consumption rate of the 1 pigs. Hollandbeck had other suggestions for weighing of pigs at 135 days and just before marketing. County extension agents or the agricultural publications office, Purdue University, Lafayette, have copies of Mimeo A. Planning For Test Os Flying Saucer WASHINGTON (UPD—America is about to test fly its first flying saucer. But the hush-hush project is about four months schedule according to a timetable made available to United Press International earlier this year. < Even so, this country is hoping to beat the Russians to the punch in developing the radical new aircraft. which the Soviets also are assumed to be working on The latest word on the saucer came from Toronto Wednesday after a free-lance photographer flew over its hangar and took a picture of the shining craft parked outside. The incident caused red faces but prompted Sir Roy Dobson, board chairman of Avro Aircraft Ltd. of Canada, which is developing the saucer for the United States, to disclose that the ‘first outside test flight will be made soon. Dobson said thtf 50 - foot - in - diameter saucer/ already had made a successful flight inside a hangar, rising under its own power on a cushion of air jetted from beneath the craft. Few details have been made public about the ne* aircraft but Pentagon sedrecy Wraps* hre expected to be at least partially removed once the saucer makes its first test flight.
