Valparaiso U. Coed Confesses Setting Fires VALPARAISO, * Ind. (UPD — A Valparaiso University senior from Chicago confessed, police said today, that she set a series'-of eight fires in six days in a girls’ dormitory on the campus. Det. Sgt. Dale Gott said Gertrude Martha Gorman, 22, a counsellor at Dau Hall, broke down and admitted during a lie detector test late Tuesday that she set the small fires “to prove to myself and others that I was competent.” Miss Gorman was present and helped put out each of the fires, set-between Oct. 14 and Oct. 19 in washrooms, a lounge, the hall chapel, and even in her own room, Gott said. The only fire which almost got out of hand, police said, was one which burned the draperies in 'Miss Gorman’s room. Miss Gorman broke down in the midst of the second lie test she had submitted to in four daysLie detector tests last Saturday ° indicated she was lying, Gott said, but Miss Gorman insisted she was innocent. A lie detector expert from Chicago, Leonard H. Harrelson, came to the campus Tuesday and it was during his test that she admitted setting the fires. Authorities said Miss Gorman was not being held on a formal 'tfcarge, pending a psychiatric exam. Miss Gorman was a major in the physical education department. She was one of a group of more than a dozen students questioned during the investigation when police realized they were up against' a case of pyromania and not a series of pranks.
