Highway 101 crosses the river thfere. Since the state has not seen fit to release any more information on this, many of us in Adams county are deeply worried. The old covered bridge at Pleasant Mills is one of the two remaining covered bridges in the county. Os course it is a relic of the past. But by just being there it recalls some of that past to us, making it a visible link with the good old days. We hope that the state is not planning to tear down the old bridge. We hope that if a new bridge is necessary, it will be built alongside the old bridge, far enough away so that the old structure can be viewed and admired - And we hope that in the near future the state highway department will inform the citizens of Pleasant Mills, and Adams county, as to just what their plans are. We know several prominent people in the community that are highly disturbed. Secret behind-the-people negotiations in a Democracy are unthinkable. The highway department should immediately make clear its intentions. This would allow those favoring some other course of action to present their side of the question, by petition, by letter, and by argument. The state historical society will be notified immediately that the state highway department is possibly considering removal of an historic covered bridge. And so will our representatives in the state legislature, and in the state house. Republicans and Democrats, working through their respective county chairmen, can do a great deal to stop such actions. Let’s get busy!

o 0 The People’s Voice This column Is for the use of our readers who wish to make suggestions for the general good or discuss questions of interest. No articles will be published without signature of the author. ■' -o Study Question Dear Editor: I wonder if I might speak to the voters in your Voice of the People column? I think they should be encouraged to think and then vote. Lowell J. Smith Dear Fellow Voters: Once more you are being asked to decide the fate of our city light plant and our electric franchise for Decatur. This being a city within a land of democracy, it is the right and duty of every voter to participate in making the decision. Since in a democracy the people have a right to help decide what shall be and what shall not be, or, in other words, participate in the affairs of government, we believe our citizenry must be educated for best participation. This should help one to think more clearly, and to come to better conclusions about any problem which he is called upon to consider. In fact, one measure of your educational attainment and your ability as a voting citizen is how carefully you study various phases of any question up for decision. On this problem of possible sale of the light plant and giving over our franchise, have you read the resolution of sale and the pending agreement with Indiana and Michigan? Have you tried to find just what will happen if such a sale takes place? Have you done any thinking about reasons why such a sale should or should not take place? As a citizen and voter, it should be your privilege and duty to know both sides of the question before being called upon to render your decision. It would be only fair to you that the arguments for each side be freely published so that you may have the greatest amount of information on which to base your decision. This is again a decision by secret ballot, and you can be thankful indeed that you have the right to give your vote in secret. There need be no element of fear involved, for no one can know how you vote unless you choose to tell. So my friends, between now and election day, make good use of your time. Talk to people, ask questions, get information on both sides, educate yourself on the question, reach your conclusion, and then vote your honest convictions. Sincerely, Lowell J. Smith High School Social Studies Teacher Urges TV Sponsors Beware Os Control NEW YORK (UPD—A prominent cosmetics manufacturer proposed today that businessmen adopt a “hands-off entertainment” code in their television advertising. TV sponsors should control only their commercials, he said, to prevent a repetition of “the shameful TV quiz hoax.” Philip Cortney, president of Coty Inc., suggested in an advertisement published in newspapers here today that the networks and stations alone should be responsible for the entertainment and editorial content of sponsored programs. Cortney noted that businessmen who purchase advertising in newspapers and magazines exercise no control over the editorial and entertainment sections of those media. “Let’s adopt the same practice for radio and television,” he said. ‘Let the businessmen be concerned only with honestly selling their products and services.” Calling on other businessmen to join in his plan, Cortney he believed it would help “prevent the repetition of such immoral conditions as those created by the big-money TV quiz shows ” The alternative, he said, was government control. Cortney also suggested that sponsors of television quiz shows proven to have been rigged be called to testify before the congressional committee, which has heard testimony from several contestants who admitted they revied questions and answers in advance. “All those who reaped benefits from this fraudulent scheme and advertising must assume responsibility for what has happened,” he said. Howe Academy Will Celebrate Founding HOWE, Ind. (UPD — Howe Military Academy will celebrate the 75th anniversary’ of its founding Saturday and Sunday.
