The inserts, consisting of a frame and mullions without glass, are clipped in place inside the window and can be removed to provide a single glass area for easy washing. The inserts are a particularly important new product for the home because thfy are available from building material dealers to fit many windows manufactured by major wood window producers. The inserts, or "diamond grids,” as they are called, combine the beauty, style, and traditional richness of diamond pane windows with ease of washing and paintliir

Quiet Colors Best Choice For Exterior Choosing exterior color for a house shouldn’t be as great a problem as most people make it, says William Manker, a leading Southern California color planning consultant. Manker, a former art instrucI tor and ceramicist who now 1 works as a color planning consultant for California home builders, offers these suggestions for exterior color: 1. Unless you have a particular theme color in mind, consider using an off white. It is a ! good base color because it has I the capability of attracting | other colors to it. Off white can ' be used effectively as a sidewall or roof color, but rarely for both. 2. Whatever color is chosen for sidewalls, Manker prefers a neutral shade of asphalt shingles for the roof, such as one of the soft, earthy, brown colors or a blue-gray blend. He points out that a roof lasts for many years, and a neutral color here does not restrict the home owner in choices of color for repainting. 3. When off white is selected for sidewalls and a neutral shade for the roof, almost any color can be chosen for trim. Manker suggests caution here, however, since a color ,on windows and trim that is too sharp or contrasty can make a house appear "chopped up.’’ A good idea, he says, is to use a light pastel color on trim and windows, possibly adding a “bright spot’’ or two of accent color for the entrance door or detail at the entrance. 4. In general, women in the family should be given the "say-so” on colors, inside and out. Manker says this is because women not only are more conscious of color and its value, but, as a rule, can see colors better than many men. About ninety percent of women, he says, have good color perception, while only about 65 percent of men can see colors welL Engineered Materials Cut Labor Costs ' Home builders and architects today have a wide range of building materials available that help reduce labor costs and keep home prices low. Among the more outstanding examples of these are panel doors and windows of ponderosa pine. These come from the factory in units with door or window pre-fitted into the frame, • The unit needs only to be nailed into the door or window \ cpening, cutting labor costs by ’ as mucn as 90 percent

0 W House Plus Remodeling Solution to Low Cost Space

If you're looking for a house with lots of space at low cost, don't ignore the possibility of buying an older home and remodeling it. If it is structurally sound, even a house that appears uninhabitable at first glance often can be modernized into an attractive, comfortable home at below the cost of a new house of comparable size. One reason for this is modern building materials and techniques. A new roof of asphalt shingles, for examplej provides maximum protection and good looks, yet can be applied over the old roof quickly and competently by a roofing contractor at a cash savings on labor. Modern mineral wool insulation also helps save remodeling dollars, since it can be installed by the home owner in many areas of the home during the remodeling process. Installed in thick enough quantities, the mineral wool also can save as much as 40 percent annually on heating fuel. | Other cost-saving materials include window and door units of ponderosa pine. These cut i Ist Dishwasher The first electrically powered dishwasher was introduced in 1913. Today, the dishwasher is completely automatic and more than 2,500,000 of them are being used in American homes.

phalt and workmen on the Tower of Babel used asphalt as mortar for the block walls. Egyptians developed an asphalt mixture to help preserve mummies and Babylonians used asphalt to build walls. The early Greek nations prized asphalt so highly that wars were fought over possession of areas where "magic asphalt” was a natural resource. Marc Antony gave large asphalt producing

NvwivwvmwAFM lilUm r M Q—Water seeps up through the concrete slab floor of our basement after a rainstorm and remains damp for days. Is there anything we can do aside from excavating and regrading? A—A Midwest home builder with the same problem solved it by coating the floor with a thin layer of asphalt roofing cement. While this was still tacky, he covered the entire floor with sheets of heavy-duty plastic film, then put down a 2-inch layer of concrete. Q —What types of repairs and improvements are eligible for an FHA home improvement loan? Also, what is the limit of an FHA home improvement loan? A—ln general, anything tha.t adds to the “livability” of a I house. A new roof of asphalt I shingles, for example, is ap- I proved under an FHA Title I I loan because it protects a house, I beautifies it and adds value to it. I A home owner now can borrow I as much as $5,000 on a Title I I loan, repayable over as long a I period as 5 years. Q — When driving finishing I nails, how can I keep from dent- I ing the wood with my hammer? I A—A rubber fitting is avail- I able that slips over the nose of I the hammer. A hole in the cen- I ter of the fitting exposes metal I for driving the nail. A collar of I rubber around the outside edges I of the nose prevents denting. I

High WindsThreal To Aging Roof Look to your roof now if you live in an area subject to high winds. Damaging windstorms are more frequent during late fall and early winter than at any other time of year. Keep in mind that it is less expensive to repair a house before a storm strikes than after hidden weak spots end up as major damage. If your roof is old, you’d be wise to have it inspected by a roofing contractor. He can apply asphalt shingles especially designed to resist winds of even hurricane force. Usually a wind-resistant application ot asphalt shingles can be made directly over the old roofing material, saving time, money and mess. It’s also a good idea to check storm shutters, eliminate dead branches in trees near the house and remove loose objects around the outside of the house. Flashlights or other emergency lighting equipment should be kept handy, along with emergency heating or cooking facilities. Asphalt Keeps Dust Out of Ivan’s Nose In Moscow recently at the American National Exhibition, the concrete flgor began to powder under the trampling feet of thousands of visitors. A layer of asphalt on top of the concrete sto ped the trouble. This was the newest use of asphalt—the basic ingredient of asphalt shingles used to roof most of the nation’s homes. Although asphalt is a highly versatile material, its most important property still is its waterproofing ability. Among its earlier uses was by the Babylonians 2,500 years before Christ to cement bricks together. Burn Leaves Safely Falling leaves are lovely to look at, but they soon become a fire hazard if allowed to collect on the grounds around the home or if they are burned in open bonfires on the street. The safe practice is to rake leaves at regular intervals, and dispose of them by using a galvanized steel rubbish burner. Such burners are made of fireproof metal and have snug-fitting covers. They allow leaves to burn rapidly without any danger to surrounding buildings.
