Ike Flies To Abilene, To Be 69 Wednesday ABILENE, Kan. (UPD—President Eisenhower, who will be 69 years old Wednesday, made a dramatic arrival in his beloved hometown today, landing in a helicopter in view of a mammoth crowd awaiting his participation in ground-breaking ceremonies The President flew to Schilling Air Force Base near Salina in a plush Air Force jetliner. A few minutes later he took off in the helicopter for the 40-mile hop to Abilene and the big pre-birthday tribute from the hometown folks. Eisenhower turned the first shovel of earth in ceremonies signalling start of construction of the Eisenhower presidential library which will house his papers when he leaves the White House in January, 1961. Given 3 Oak Trees He also planned to use the occasion to call for an expansion of free-world aid to underdeveloped countries. He will return to Washington Wednesday. Before taking off from Andrews Air Force Base. Md., near Washington, Eisenhower was presented three red oak trees as birthday gifts from the Republican National Committee and the GOP Senate and House campaign committees. About 50 Republican leaders applauded as the President and GOP National Chairman Thruston B. Morton took turns with a longhandled shovel. Eisenhower’s several days of birthday celebrations began Monday night when he was the guest at a big banquet given in his honor by the White House Correspondents Association. Some 1,100 newsmen and guests turned out for the affair. Says Event "Surprise” The President described the evening as a surprise “from beginning to end.’ One surprise was a silver-plated replica of golfing great Bobby Jones’ famous “Calamity Jane” putter presented to Eiisenhower by Jones as a gift from the newsmen. Only two other presidents, Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan reached the age of 69 in the White House. If Eisenhower lives out his term, he will set an old-age record for a President and would be the only Chief Executive to reach 70 in the White House. Indianapolis Duplex Home Is Wrecked INDIANAPOLIf (UPD — Police sought today the vandals who wrecked a duplex home in a white neighborhood which the owner had advertised for sale to either white or Negro families. He said draperies and rugs were slashed, light fixtures ripped from the ceilings, holes punched in the walls and bathroom fixtures broken.
