Oct. 16 Deadline For Soil Bank Farmers who expect to participate in the 1960 conservation reserve of the soil bank have another deadline coming up. Friday, Oct. 16, is the last day to apply for contracts to begin next year, according to chairman James Garboden of the Adams County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee. Under the conservation reserve for 1960, the chairman explains, the farmer’s first step was to ask the county ASC committee to establish a basic annual payment for his farm. The deadline for that request was Oct. 9. All farmers who made that request have received or are about to receive notification of the basic rates established for the land they propose to place in the reserve. This may be either part or all of the cropland on the farm. The next step is for the farmer, if he still wants to participate, to apply for a contract at any amount below the per-acre rate established for his land. After entering this information on the application form, he returns the form to the county ASC office for final approval. This is the step that must be taken by Oct. 16. After the applications are returned to the county office, contracts that can be accepted under the regulations will be offered to farmers for signature before the 1960 crop season begins.
