Haney Quits As Manager Os Milwaukee LOS ANOELES <UPD Fred Haney today was a man of leisure —by choice — following his long-expected resignation as manager of the Milwaukee Braves. The spunky little baseball brain called it quits Sunday night after a meeting with the Braves front office brass, here for the World Series that the Milwaukee club almost made. , ■ ' “There is no problem, I've just had enough of active baseball,’' the 61-year-old Haney said. “I have no future plans—other than a long rest.” * Haney was reported to have been preferred a new one-year contract by Braves General Manager John McHale. Although Haney resigned here, the step was announced officially by the ball dub in Milwaukee. There was no immediate announcement tfrom the Braves' management regarding a replacement. However, mentioned as prominent “choices” were Bobby Bragan, Leo Durocher and Red Schoendlenst. The champinship winning skipper was not expected to remain idle long. He already is assured of one job. Like his fellow southern California, Casey Stengel, he was set to become a banker—vice president of the Studio City Bank of San Fernando Valley. Then there were reports ne would soon return to broadcasting baseball, either as a voice for the Los Angeles Dodgers or as the replacement for Leo DuJERRY SAYS, Saturday Night, SI.OO Admission for Entire Family Gillette World Series Razors ’1.95 “Either Store” Holthouse Brag Co.'

Columbia City Jr. High Here Tuesday The Decatur junior high football team, boasting of an unbeaten record this year, tangles with a tough ■ Columbia City eleven at Worthman reserves of the Colts and Rams field Tuesday at 7 o’clock. The meet in the first contest that night at 5:30 o’clock. After mauling a rugged New Haven squad Sept. 21 by a 13-0 margin, the junior team has practiced without benefit of an actual game, pointing to the Columbia City contest. The scrimmages, however, revealed several weaknesses and improvements and these alterations will be noticed in the line-up Tuesday night. A couple of the boys will switch positions, while a counle more will find their starting jobs taken away by other boys who have shown good aggressive spirit and desire to play the game. A tentative starting line-up was not announced by the coachbig staff as this afternoon’s session will do much to solve the coaches dilemma. A The offensive alignment will remain pretty much the same with one or possibly two exceptions The team will use the multiple offense as usual .running about half and half from the T-formation and single-wing. The offense may be shifted a bit by the addition of a winged T-formation, but only if the basic plays seem stymied. The group has also operated from a double wing, short punt formation for passing purposes. At the last junior meeting against New Haven a crowd of about 200 attended the game. Parents, friends, and sports fans are urged to attend this last inter- , school contest of the saeson. The fans who attended the last one saw the best football game of the year ’ here, according to varsity coach Bob Worthman. Pro Football Chicago Bears 26, Baltimore 21. Philadelphia 49, New York 21. Wisconsin And Purdue Battle Next Saturday CHICAGO (UPD—Northwestern will finally relinquish its starring role in the Big Ten's game of the, week Saturday when Wisconsin and Purdue clash in another test of the league’s potential champions. » Northwestern, sitting pretty as the nation's second-ranked football team with two upset victories in two games, tackles Minnesota Saturday. The Wildcats, who have beaten Oklahoma, 45-13, and lowa, 14-10, can figure in their third upset of the season—but this time only by losing. Despite the loss of first-string quarterback Dick Thornton, . the Wildcats were expected to knock the Gophers from a share of the league lead in the contest at Evanston, 111. Thornton suffered a broken left ankle on the opening kickoff against lowa and was expected to be sidelined for all but the last game of the season. Purdue Loses Quarterback Purdue, the consensus choice for the title this season, also suffered a blow when X-rays revealed that quarterback Ross Fichtner suffered a fractured shoulderbone in the Boilermakers’ 28-7 romp over Notre Dame. He was expected to be out for the rest of the season. Fichtner went out on the first play of the third period after he had thrown one touchdown pass and carried the ball for 77 yards in 11 tries. Coach Jack Mollenkopf said junior Bernie Allen would take over as quarterback. In other games Saturday, Illinois is at Ohio State, Michigan State at lowa, Marquette at Indiana and Oregon State at Michigan. Gopers Top Indiana Illinois, which surprised with a 20-14 triumph over Army, will be seeking its first conference success. Indiana beat the Illini. 20-0, in a season-opener for both. The Hoosiers, however, failed to live to up their early reputation when they bowed 24-14 to Minnesota last Saturday, allowing the once-beaten Gophers to move into! a three-way tie for first place with Northwestern and Michigan State. The Spartans rolled over Michigan, 34-8, after losing to Texas A&M in its season opener. It was the second loss in two tries for the Wolverines who fell before Missouri, 20-15, earlier. Wisconsin won as expected; in downing Marquette, 44-6, but Ohio State,’ which squeezed by with a 14-13 edge over Duke, was blanked, 17-0, by California. Buckey coach Woody Hayes did not take it lightly. He chewed out his dejected squad for 23 minutes after the game and was accused of slugging a sportswriter’s assistant in the dressing room. Who would have picked the San I Francisco Forty-Niners and the Green Bay Packers to wind up as the only unbeaten teams in the National Football League after the first two weeks of headknocking? However, that was the. situation today after one of the greatest .wave of upsets in the 40-year history of the NFL. <> It all started Saturday night ( when the Chicago Bears (6%point underdogs) rolled to a 26-21 victory over the Baltimore Colts, defending world champions. But that was only the begin-, ning. Four of Sunday's five games also produced upsets. The Philadelphia Eagles <5 - point underdogs) ripped the 1958 Eastern Division champion New York Giants. 49-21; the Washington Redskins (7% - point underdogs) turned back the Pittsburgh Steelers, 23-17; the Cleveland Browns (3-point underdogs) rolled to a 34-7 triumph over the Chicago Cardinals, and the Forty - Niners (4-point underdogs) handed the Los Angeles Rams their first shutout since 1949, 34-0. The oddsmakers didn't even come close on the Green BayDetroit game. The Packers were favored by one point on the basis of their 9-6 opening victory over the Bears but they won going away, 28-10. While the form-followers shook their heads in dismay, the Packers and Forty-Niners found themselves sharing first place in the Western Division with 2-0 records.
