September Ends On. Cool Note In State United Press International September ends today on a cool note in Indiana, with below-normal temperatures and dry weather scheduled to prevail into next weekend. The mercury dipped into the 40s over the state's north portion this morning as a cool front moved in on the heels of several days of showery and turbulent conditions. Partly to mostly cloudy conditions featured today’s weather and were expected to continue Thursday and Friday, with no rain expected until “around Sunday.” The five-day outlook covering this final day of September and the first few days of October called for temperatures average 3 to 7 degrees below normal. That would mean highs ranging from around 65 to 75 and lows ranging from around 40 to 55. “Continued cool with only minor day-to-day changes,” the outlook said. Precipitation, when it resumes after a few days' respite, will average one-half to one inch in showers, outlook said. Gosherr‘i’44 Was the lowest temperature recorded this morning. South Bend had 45, Lafayette 49, and Fort Wayne 50, and Evans-* ville’s 56 and Indianapolis’ 57 were more moderate. Before the temperature dropped to the overnight low points it reached 84 at« Louisville and 81 at Cincinnati Tuesday. Elsewhere, readings were in the 60s and 70s. South Bend recorded 67, Lafayette 68, Fort Wayne 70, Indianapolis 74 and Evansville 75. Today’s highs will range from the mid 60s to near 70, tonight’s lows from the mid 40s to the mid 50s, and Thursday’s highs from the mid 60s to near 70. Secretary Benson Visiting Russia MOSCOW (UPD — U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson today began a Russian visit at the invitation of Agriculture Minister Vladimir Matskevich. Jury Holds Initiation Death As Accidental LOS ANGELES (UPD - A coroner’s jury has voted, 12-1, that the death of a college student who choked on raw liver during a fraternity initiation was accidental. The panel also ruled Tuesday that the death of Richard T. Swanson 21. Was free of any criminal responsibility. The University of Southern California dental student died Sept. 17 after trying to swallow oil - smeared liver during hazing activities at .the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He lived like a white man divorcing his old squaw, whom he'Hept as a servant, and marrying a young Indian girl, and kept a laigE retinue of colored slaves. He.,contracted the gout, which finally took his life in 1812. HolycrOSH showed slides of the grave of Little Turtle, and explained how it was discovered. In summing up the life of Little Turtle, Holycross called him, “a great Hoosier, a great statesman, great general, famous traveler, and fine citizen of Whitley county.”

Federal Gas Tax Increase Thursday WASHINGTON (UPD — Today is the last chance for the nation’s motorists to fill up their tanks and escape an additional penny-a-gal-lon federal tax on gasoline starting at midnight. Virtually all dealers were expected to pass the tax increase on, to their customers. The increase was enacted by Congress to help keep the interstate highway program on schedule. The penny increase now brings the total federal tax to 4 cents a gallon. 1,271 Rail Crossing Deaths During 1958 WASHINGTON (UPD — The Interstate Commerce Commission reported today that 1,271 persons were killed in a total of 3,099 collisions at railroad highway crossings last year. The ICC said 3,160 persons also were injured in various types of accidents, including pedestrians as wall as motor vehicles and trains, at rail-highway intersections in 1958. Federal Civilian Employment Higher WASHINGTON <UPD — Sen. Harry F. Byrd (D-Va.) reported today that civilian employment in the federal government increased by 1,914 in August, raising the total to 2,372,608. Byrd, chairman of the Congressional Committee on Reduction of nonessential federal expenditures, said the the heaviest increases in government employment last month were in civilian agencies, which added 1,072 workers. He said the increase brought the civilian agencies’ work force total to 1,293,804. Pleads Innocent To Assault, Battery NEW CASTLE, Ind. (UPD — Bryan Conwell, 50, a Henry County farmer, pleaded innocent to assault and battery and criminal provocation charges Tuesday in an alleged attack on county surveyor Lamont O’Harra. Conwell was released on $175 bond and trial was slated for Nov. 5. O’Harra charged that Conwell struck him in the head when he apparently became angered by the size of an assessment for repairs to a drainage ditch. Denver Is Struck By Ten Inches Os Snow DENVER (UPD — Students eyed ski slopes on the western horizon today, dog tired repairmen were still busy restoring electric service and traffic signals, and homeowners assesed shrub, tree and roof damage which may exceed seven million dollars in Denver, which was caught pnprepared for 10.6 inches of heavy, wet snow. The storm began in the early hours Tuesday. By dawn, every tree and bush in the city drooped beneath the weight of clinging snow. Limbs eight inches thick broke from trees. They crashed onto roof and car tops, across sidewalks and streets. Power and telephone lines went down all • over town. Unpruned shrubbery was flattened. In the high Rockies, snowslides and snowfalls of as much as 15 inches closed roads. Fraser, Colo., had 24 inches of snow on the ground Tuesday night. Several mountain areas started up chair lifts and rope tows, as winter sportsmen showed up for their earliest crack at the ski slopes in recent metnory. Highway crews opened a mountain road west of Denver in time for Mrs. Thomas Holbrok, 28. to give birth to a son in a city hospital. Four runaway boys in their early teens, believed to have been living off food found in mountain cabins west of Denver for the past week, were still unlocated after the storm subsided.
