President Os U.S. Steel Dies Today HYANNIS, Mass. (UPD — Walter F. Munford, $250,000-a-year president of the strikebound U. S. Steel Corp., died today after suffering a stab wound and a stroke last week. He was 59. Munford died at Cape Cod Hospital six days after he was admitted for a stomach knife wound which authorities said was accidentally inflicted. Less than 24 hours later he suffered a stroke which slowed down recovery from the stabbing. His wife and two sons were at his bedside when he died. The stab wound, whieh penetrated his abdomen three inches, was ruled accidental by a district attorney who investigated the case. Munford was said to have slipped on a highly-polished floor while carrying the knife to the kitchen of his summer home in nearby Chatham last Wednesday. Since taking over the presidency of the giant steel combine May 5, Munford has been under a constant pressure. His firm and other major steel producers are paralyzed by one of the longest strikes in the industry’s history.
