Record Tomato Crop In Adams County A record tomato crop, figured at 18 per cent larger than last year despite less acreage being used this year, received a slight setback in Adams county and most other northern Indiana counties as the three-week early frost whitened the area late last week. County agent Leo Seltenright said today after an inspection trip of the stricken area that most of the crops were beyond damage, but some of the late-planted soy beans and tomatoes suffered a little more than normal. Had the frost arrived on its normal date, Seltenright said, the damage would net have affected the county. The early arrival of the frost, however, did cause minor damage to certain low areas in the county. The extent of the damage will not be known until harvest time. Some Beans Hart The corn and beans, otherwise not affected, would be hastened in the ripening process, Seltenright added. Both of them were far enough along not to hinder them. Mrs. Mabel Schmitt, of the Decatur Canning Co., said this afternoon that the peak of the season had already past when the frost struck this area, and that although the crop picking had been curtailed by the frost, it did not affect production at the local plant as the machinery was being run to capacity. Mrs. Schmitt added that the influx of the tomatoes all seemed to arrive at the same time. She agred with state experts who had /said that more' tomatoes were being raised on fewer acres this year, pointing out that in one instance, five acres of cropland provided enough materials to keep the plant running for one full day. This amounted to about 80100 tons of tomatoes around the clock. To date, she went on to explain, the plant has processed more than 2,000 tons of tomatoes and that production is expected to cease here the week after next, if all goes well. Farmers are planning one more picking tour of the fields. She concluded by saying that the farmers had been most cooperative this season and the labor situation was never less of a concern because of the assistance given by the local and state officials. Crop Statistical Estimates Estimates from the state-feder-al agricultural statisticians at Purdue show that other crops figures will also fluctuate this year. Sweet canning corn: 57-800 tons,
