Adequate Storage Must Be Available With another big feed supply in the making, chairman James Garboden of the Adams ASC county committee today reminded farmers who want to participate in the price-support program this fall and winter that adequate storage must be available. Pointing out the advantages of on-farm cribs and bins as an important supplement to warehouse, storage, the chairman reminded local farmers that (1) they cannot obtain a price-support loan on their crop unless they have a place to store it; <2l holding back part of the crop instead of rushing it all to market at harvesttime may result in a better price, and (3) storing feed grains on the farm means greater convenience for the farmer since the crops are on hand when needed for livestock feeding. Garboden urged that Indiana farmers look over their farm storage carefully and plan on buying or building more structures if they are needed. Under the government farm storage facility loan program, a farmer may obtain a loan of up to 80 percent of the cost of a new grain storage structure at 4 per cent interest. The loan runs for 5 years and may be repaid in annual installments after the first year. Production of the fqur feed grains—corn, oafs, barley and sorghum grain—is expected to be nearly equal to last year’s record output of 158 million tons. Carryover stocks of old grain into 1959-60 are expected to increase to around 68 million tons, 9 million more than in 1958-59.
