Suburban- Home Os Union Head Fired INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — (The suburban home of Gene San Soucie, top Indiana Teamsters Union official and close friend of Jimmy Hoffa, was virtually destroyed by fire early today and authorities said it was “definitely” a case of arson. Damage to the two-story north side home was estimated ny fire* men at between $16,000 and $20,000. The flames were touched off only a few hours after San Soucie and his wife flew to Chicago Monday night to attend a Teamsters meeting. Even before firemen extinguished the flames, investigators from the state fire marshal's office sifted charred ruins for clues. “It’s definitely a case of arson,” said Marion County Deputy Sheriff Oscar Cubel. ——- — * Authorities said a preliminary investigation showed that a fuel line leading to the basement oil burner was cut and the basement floor was flooded with fuel. Candle fuses were found in several sections of the home. The fire started in the southwest corner of the home, either from a candle fuse or a furnace pilot light, investigators said. A neighbor, Mrs. Ray Von Olen, called the fire department after Jseing wakened by the barking of her dog about 2:30 a.m. James Harmon, a caretaker who lives behind the San Sourcie home, said he saw no prowlers and did not hear unusual noises during the night. Reached in Chicago, San Soucie said he planned to fly back to Indianapolis almost immediately and “see what the hell’s cooking.” He said he had no leads and had not been threatened. “If I’d been threatened and found out who it was,, there wouldn’t have been a fire, you can bet on that,” he said. San Soucie is president of Teamsters Local 135 here. He also heads the State Drivers Conference of Teamsters and is vice president of the Midwest Drivers Conference of Teamsters.
