Final Tax Rate The tax adjustment board, last local authority to exercise its influence on the local tax rate, met Monday, and approved the following rates, which are still subject to action by the state tax adjustment board: ' Berne $6.07 Jefferson $3.71 Decatur-Root 6.24 Kirkland 4.04 Decatur-Washington 6.25 Monroe 4.19 Geneva 5.73 Preble 2.96 Monroe-Monroe 5.09 Root 3.39 Monroe-Washington 5.06 St. Marys 3.60 Blue Creek 2.68 Union 2.98 French 4.59 Wabash 4.59 Hartford 3.35 Washington 4.22 These rates will be advertised in the Decatur Daily Democrat one time, with a breakdown so that everyone may see just how the complete tax rate for any unit is composed. We suggest that you clip these out, and save them; compare the rates this year with those proposed next year; study the proposed budgets next year. Perhaps you can find where some should be trimmed. At Columbia City the tax adjustment board likewise left the budget untouched—Columbia City’s rate will be $7.22 next year. Churubusco will have a rate of $8 .05. The Blackford county council cut the budget over there slightly, as did most of the county councils. The Fort Wayne rate is $6,526 per SIOO valuation, nearly 28 cents per SIOO valuation higher than Decatur’s; and of course Fort Wayne property is valued more highly, too. It is interesting to note that the only rates lower in Fort Wayne than their comparative rates in Decatur are the school rates and the library rates. This means that a larger unit for each than Decatur is possible with a gain in efficiency. In other words, a larger school district here would probably mean less expensive school costs and more efficient annual operation with resulting savings. Numerous rumblings have been heard concerning certain budgets; perhaps it would be well to consider some of these budgets before next summer. It could be that a considerable amount of money can be saved. Next year is an election year. No doubt county budgets, especially in offices where officials will be up for election, will be carefully pruned. If any ten taxpayers affected by the tax levy object within ten days after publication of the county rates, the state tax board will hear their complaints.

CHAPTER SI YOU JUST gave Sylvia Hadley the thousand bucks on the strength of her say-so ?" Sergeant Frank Sellers asked Mortimer Jasper. “That’s right I relied on her honesty,” Jasper replied. "How long had you known her before you gave her this thousand bucks?” "Not very long. I teD you I really know very little about her." "How did she happen to come to you with this story?" “I met her." "Where did you meet her?" Jasper tried to look to Sylvia for a signal Sellers grabbed him by the ahoulders and spun him around. “She came to me," Jasper said. “She had heard I was interested In certain objects of art She wanted to know if it would be worth a thousand dollars to me to get a very old. very beautiful piece of jade." “You lying dog!" Sylvia screamed at him. "You commissioned me to get those jade Idols from the Crockett collection and promised me a thousand bucks apiece! You didn't give me the thousand dollars until 1 gave you the first tdoL Fd have got both of them at the one time, but Dean Crockett had one of them locked up when I grabbed the first one." “Now, that’s better," Inspector Thad Giddings said, seating himselt “Sit down, folks, let’s be comfortable." "What ’do, you know!" Sellers ■eld, grinning. “That tea complete fabrication." Jasper said with dignity. “In view of the accusation. 1 am going to insist that 1 be permitted to get tn touch with my lawyer." “Any objection to our looking around?" Sellers asked. “For what?" "To see if you’ve got a jade idol of that sort kicking around here." "I can assure you I don’t have anything of the sort" "How about that safe?" “There’s a time lock on it It can’t be opened until nine o’clock tomorrow morning. That la for my protection tn case of burglars. That is an." "Any objection to our coming back in the morning to see what’s inside?" “1 ... I can assure you there is no such jade Idol tn there." "How about the rest of the place?" Sellers asked "1 have no objection to you looking around," Jasper said. Let’s take a look.” “If that desk is opened, you're going to open It." Jasper said, “and I don’t think you have a search warrant.” “I’ll soon get one," Sellers told him. “On the strength of what you’ve said 1 can get it" “No, you can’t" Jasper said. Sellers looked at Giddings and frowned. Giddings looked at Sylvia.
