School Bands, Teachers Are Honored At Fair INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—Ninetytwo bands and 92 teachers, a $2,500 steer and two kinds of queens were spotlighted today at the 107th Indiana State Fair. Anderson High School was trying for a third straight championship in the annual band contest. The 92 teachers, one from each county, were honor guests on the second day of the fair. “Education Day." A free vacation trip was to be awarded to one of the teachers. In the afternoon, a 1.096 pound Hereford steer which won the 4-H grand championship Wednesday was to be auctioned to the highest bidder. The steer, which also won die open class gold medal championship, was owned by John M. Wolf. 16, a Peru High School junior. The double state champion steer should bring his youthful owner at least $2,500 if the starting price of $2.30 per pound promised by Governor Handley is achieved. The 1958 champion, owned by Dale Darlage, Portland, brought only $2.00 a pound. Wolf already has a place for the money. He will use it for his college education. Beauty Queen Reigns A state cherry pie baking queen was to be chosen today. Hie fair named a beauty queen Wednesday night when Deborah Deanne Smith, 18, a brunette from Lebanon, was picked from among more than 40 hopefuls to reign over the 1959 fair. Miss Smith was crowned by last year's queen: Carol Parks of Crawfordsville. Runner-up to Miss Smith was Shirley Ann Henderson, 17, Rochester. Dale Davies, 17, Milligan, won the reserve 4-H grand championship with his Shorthorn Wednesday but couldn’t be on hand to accept the honors himself. Davies was recovering from a virus infection and the prize steer was shown by his brother, Jim, 14. The Angus breed champion shown by Sandra Horton. 15, Linden, failed to win top honors for the first time since 1953. Reserve breed champions were a Shorthorn shown by Tom Capper, Star City; a Hereford shown by Mace Bullock, New Castle, and an Angus shown by Roger’ Nellans, Mentone. Champion showmen, by breed, were Bruce Baker, Jonesboro, Shorthorn; Eddie Nelson, Galveston, Hereford, and Nellans, Angus. In the open gold medal steer competition, Davies’ Shorthorn and Wolf’s Hereford also won the breed championship but the Shorthorn lost out as reserve champion to an Angus shown by Larry Angle, Rushville. (UPD — A teen-ager whose wife is expecting a baby within 10 days died today of shotgun wounds inflicted by a 15-year-old boy who apparently surprised the husband in a rendezvous with a girl friend, police said. • Charles Jenne, 18, Washington, was wounded fatally, officers said, as he sat along a railroad track at the northwest edge of Washington with 17-year-old Alberta Ruth Yerkes. Held on a preliminary charge of murder was Larry Brown, 15, Washington, who told police he shot Jenne because he beat and abused him and other boys in their neighborhood. Police said Jenne apparently had been keeping company with Alberta and threatened acquaintances with harm if they told his wife. Mrs. Georgia Jenne, 18, expects a baby within a few days, authorities said. The shooting occurred along the New York Central tracks an hour before midnight Wednesday. When Jenne fell wounded with shotgun slugs in his head, Alberta ran screaming to a nearby home and called police. She was hysterical and was placed under sedation. Larry walked 20 blocks to the police station and surrendered. Jenne died a few hours later in Daviess County Hospital without making a statement to police. Authorities said Larry and Alberta both had been in juvenile court previously, the boy on a theft charge and the girl for delinquency.
