Indiana State Fair Opened This Morning INDIANAPOLIS <UPI) — Indiana’s colorful 107th annual state fair opened a 10-day stand today with the sun peeking through an overcast just as the crowds started rolling through the gates. About an inch of rain peppered the grounds Tuesday and at times during the night, but the weather failed to put a damper on the big show. Governor Handley and Lt. Gov. Crawfoord F. Parker, however, were forced indoors for a ceremony opening the fair, which runs through Sept. 10. The ceremony originally was planned for the racetrack in front of the grandstand. But wet grounds and drizzle moved it to the Coliseum, where Handley accepted the state’s first 50-star flag. Men and women in shorts strolled through the fairgrounds in increasing numbers as the gates opened and the vanguard of nearly a million visitors flocked into the area. Already, the first of hundreds of champions wore their crowns. A tractor pulling contest, delayed from Tuesday morning until evening by the weather, finally wound up in today’s wee small hours with five champions in divisions based on tractor weight. They were Dale Mitchell, Waceland; Ival Coy, Flatrock; Robert Hedrick, Huntington; Doyle, Paul, Andrews and Ralph Reed, Talbot. While judges studied, sampled and ribboned winning entries, many of the 4-H youngsters whose exhibits were on display waited the arrival of singer Ricky Nelson, idol of the teen-age crowd, who flies into town this afternoon for Coliseum entertainment appearances. 1 Sweepstakes winners in open culinary divisions included Mrs. Herbert Kusling, Pendleton, for jelly; Margaret Garwood, Linton, pickles, and Alice Carney, Ladoga, candy. A team from Amboy won top honors in a 4-H and Future Farmers forestry judging contest. The team was composed of Ernest Thode and Bill Snow. Thode, 17, was top individual winner. Four-H top winners in girls divisions included Alma Gholson, Salem, baking; Ruby Graves. Rockville, clothing; Judy Bums, Wolcott, food preparation; Dee Deutsch, Newburgh, food presentation; Judy Miller, Madison, home improvement, and Mary Shelton, Evansville, electrical. In 4-H swine judging, the champion Duroc gilt was shown by Dave Jackson, Galveston, with Marvin Jolliff, Elnora, winning the reserve championship. .
