Take Applications For Farm Exchange Have a yen to travel and meet new people? , . Adams county farm youths between 20 and 30 years of age may now file applications to go abroad under the 1960 international farm youth exchange program. Only unmarried young men and women with an outstanding farm and organizational background can qualify for the program, meant for "good will ambassadors,” Leo N. Seltenrlght, county agricultural agent, states. Preliminary applications may be obtained from the county extension office. They must be completed and sent to the state 4-H club department at Purdue University before September 19. Personal interviews will be Saturday, September 26. at Purdue. The six youths selected as IFYE delegates will live abroad with farm families next year, and on their return to Indiana, will be expected to relate their experiences at various group meetings. Sharing the cost of the foreign assignments will be the counties, the Purdue collegiate 4-H club, the agricultural extension service and the national 4-H foundation. Eric A. Holm, state leader of the IFYE program at Purdue, points out that 34 Hoosiers have gone abroad since the program's beginning. Sixty-six foreign visitors have lived with 237 Indiana farm families in 84 counties. Last year, two IFYES visited in Adams county: Miss Helidee Pinzon V., from Panama, who stayed with the William Griffiths family in Kirkland township; and Luis Jose Demaria, from Argentina, who stayed with the William Kohne family in Washington township, and with the Harold Mosers, in French township. Front Os Cool Air Is Moving Eastward United Press International A long - awaited cool air front moved eastward across the nation Monday, but thunderstorms which broke the summer’s worst heat wave in the East left eight persons dead. The mass of Canadian air spread over the mid - Mississippi Valley and the lower Great Lakes region Monday. There was a slight warming trend in Montana, however, and the southwest continued hot with Blythe, Calif., reporting a midnight reading of 98 degrees. Heavy thunderstorms hit Texas and Oklahoma during the night. Mineral Wells, Okla., measured 1.39 inches and Dallas, Tex., had l. inches. At McKinney, Tex., 17 fishermen were set adrift on stormtossed Lake Avon when a barge lost its morrings during a 60 m. wind. Sheriff’s officers rescued the men early Monday. A hailstorm, with winds up to 48 m.p.h., hit the Detroit area around the city’s airport Sunday. One woman was knocked down by lightning and the wind casued extensive property damage. Gusts up to 58 miles hit Dallas and Charlotte, N.C., reported more than 2 inches of rain. The thunderstorm activity killed four persons in the New York area Saturday. Three persons in ' altoona, Pa., and one in Hartford, Conn., died when they were struck by lightning bolts. The cool breezes dropped the mercury 10 to 15 degrees across the Plains during the night. Oil-Stained Rugs Often oil stains on rugs can be eradicated by treating the spots first with a cloth soaked in limewater, then washing if necessary. Ballots Mailed On Wool, Lamb Program Ballots for voting the September referendum on the lamb and wool marketing development program have been mailed to producers in Adams county, James Garboden, chairman of the Adams county agricultural stabilization and conservation committee, announced today. The referendum will determine whether or not deductions will continue to be made from producer payments earned under the wool incentive program. Funds collected are used by the American sheep producers council to carry out a program of advertising, promotion, and related activities under an agreement with the secretary of agriculture. 'Die agreement, which has been 1 in effect since the 1955 marketing year, will be extended for 3 years if approved in the September referendum. Producers having twothirds of the volume of production represented in the referendum must approve if the agreement is to be extended. Deductions from wool and lamb payments under the new agreement would not exceed 1 cent per pound for shorn wool and 5 cents per hundredweight for unshorn lambs. Deductions at these rates have been made from payments for each marketing year since 1955. Producers may vote throughout September. The entire month has been designated as the voting period to encourage as large a turn-, out as possible. Any producer who believes he is eligible to vote and does not receive a ballot within the next few days should get in touch with the county ASC office. To be counted, ballots must be received by the county ASC office not later than September 30. Chairman Garboden urged producers to mark and return their ballots as soon as they are received. Two Boys Are Slain In Latest Outbreak - NEW YORK (UPI) — Police rounded up 15 youth Sunday night and early today for questioning in the slaying of two 16-year-old boys in the latest outbreak of teen-age violence. Chief of Detectives James B. Leggett said at least two of the youths would be charged with murder and the others would be charged with unlawful assembly or held as material witnesses. More than 100 persons had been questioned before police revealed that they had singled out definite suspects. The most recent killings oc- . curred in the notorious “Hell's , Kitchen” section of Manhattan eari ly Sunday. Two other youths were . injured in' the attack by a group of young toughs. , The attack brought the number of teenage slayings during the summer months to at least 20 and another 38 wounded. At least 10 teen-agers have been charged with murder since the summer started. Police said the juvenile crime wave was getting worse every day. “ITie situation is explosive,” an official of the New York City Youth Board said. Juvenile lawlessness has ranged from “pranks” to wrecking cars in parking lots, then up to muggings, stranglings, stabbings, stomping an old man to daath, and all-out street battles—“rumbles”—with broken bottles, knives, zip guns and even sawed-off shotguns. Some of the teen-aged street gangs have borrowed the practices of their more mature predecessors like the' Capone mob by “importing” youthful killers from other parts of the city to carry out their vengeance. (UPI) - T h e Marion Chamber of Commerce last week filed a petition with the Interstate Commerce Commission asking that the Eastern Time Zone be extended westward to include Grant County.
