Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
1. Q—How does social security arrive at the amount of disability benefits? A—This depends on the average monthly earnings of the disabled worker. It is figured in the same way as the amount of the old age benefit which is paid at age 65. 2. Q— l saw Something’ recently about widower’s benefits. Under what conditions can a widower draw social security benefits? A—Occasionally a wife was supporting the family due to the illness or infirmity of the husband. If the wife dies, the widower may receive monthly benefits based on her work provided: (1) he is 65; (2) he was financially dependent on her for over one-half his support at the time she died. 3. Q—l am getting disability benefits. In May 1959 I will be age 65. Must I notify social security to stop my disability payments? A—No. Your payment will automatically be changed from disability benefits to retirement payments. 4. Q—Do I have to continue paying social security tax on my farm income even though I receive social security payments? A—ls you are the farm operator and have net earnings of S4OO or more in the taxable year, you are required to pay the self-em-ployment tax. 5. Q —l lost my husband in 1939. Now I am 79 and need social security. They tell me I can’t get it but I know many widows who do get it. Why is this? < A—The provision for survivors benefits went into effect January 1, 1940. No widow’s benefits can be paid where the death of the wage earner occurred before 1940. 6. Q —My husband is getting disability benefits. He may not live more than 3 months. Is it possible for him to draw his disability payment in one lump sum before he dies? A—No lump sum amount is payable under disability. The law provides for monthly payments only. 17. Q —l started drawing my social security benefits in 1956 when I became 65. Recently I became severely disabled. Now can I draw both disability and regular retirement payments? A—No. You can draw only your retirement payments. Disability benefits are payable to qualified individuals but only between the ages of 50 and 65. 8. Q —l’m a woman worker and will be 62 in October 1959.1 worked under social security frorft January 1951 to February 1957. How many quarters do I need at 62? Do 1 have enough? A—A person your age must have 17 quarters of social security credit or about 4 years and one quarter. From what you say, you have about 24 or 25 quarters so it appears that you have enough quarters of credit. 9. Q — l graduated and was ordained a minister in June 1957. Then I became an assistant minis- ‘ ter .and earned $2500 in 1957 and : $4200 in 1958. I understand I have ■ 2 years in which to file a waiver certificate at Internal Revenue if i I decide to elect social security ’ coverage. As I see it, I have until , June 1959. Am I right? I A—No. April 15, 1959 is the ■ deadline since it is the due date . of the tax return for the second i year in which your net earnings . were over S4OO. Incidentally the . deadline for this waiver certificate is April 15, 1959, for older ministers as well as yourself. receiving at least % of her support from you. There will be no payments to your mother in the event you retire and become eligible for monthly payments. Dual Wheat Yields Best On Average Dual wheat from seed that carried less than one-half 4 per cent loose smut outyielded all other yielding varieties of wheat, on an average in 25 Hoosier counties G. P. Walker, Purdue University extension agronomist, summarized the 25 variety demonstrations that took place this summer in Indiana. Adams county’s variety demonstration Was on the Hugo Bulmahn farm in cooperation with county agent Leo N. Seltenright. The average yields for the 25 harvests were as follows: Dual, 36.5 bushels per acre; LaPorte, 35; Vermillion, 34.5; Knox, 33.5; Vigo, 28; and Seneca, 27.5. In the Adams county’s demonstration, the wheat yields were Dual, 37 bushels per acre; Vermillion, 36; LaPorte, 34.5; Knox, 30.5; Vigo, 22, and Seneca, 19.5. Test weights for the 25-county average were Knox, 59.5; LaPorte, 59.0; Vermillion, 58.5; Dual and Vigo, 58 each; and Seneca, 57 pounds per bushel. Under conditions of ice and water damage in low areas where not everything was killed, Vermillion came through the best, the report said. Report was next in resistance to the winter kill. In general. Dual withstood such conditions a little beter han Knox. Seneca thinned out the worse .with Vigo showing a little advantage. LaPorte was tops in resistance to loose smut, with scarcely a damaged head in plot or field seedings from untreated seed. Vermillion is showing a much slower build-up of smut than Knox or Dual, the report continued. Seneca showed much more smut in previous years, and it had a noticeable amount of stem rust at some locations and was thinned out and hurt by winter kill more than Vermillion, LaPorte, Dual, or Knox. Urges-Grasshopper . Control Methods Grasshopper infestations are appearing throughout the state, and now is he time to spray, before the hoppers become adults and move out into the crop fields. The grasshoppers, Dave Matthew, Purdue University extension entomologist, reports, are appear- [ ing in moderate numbers in localized areas throughout the state. Infestations are commonest along ’ roadsides, in fence rows and. In field margins next to infested stub-ble-clover fields. Where infesta- ■ tions appear, the hoppers should be sprayed now before the youpg 1 hoppers mature and move into the ■ fields. Spraying now gives better ! control and requires less insecticide material. Aldrin,' heptachlor, toxaphene, chlordane and dieldrin are all effective insecticides for grasshopper control. These materials are available as wettable powders, emulsion concentrates and dusts. Apply aldrin at the rate of a. half pint of 25 percent emulsion concenrate per acre or heptachlor 25 percent emulsion at three-quarters pint per acre, or toxaphene 60 percent emulsion at two pints per acre. Other formulas should be according to directions on the labels. For specific problems or questions, Matthew advises growers to contact their local county extension agent and to ask for Purdue Mimeo E-19. This mimeographed bulletin gives information and recommendations for grasshopper control. CORRECTION The name of the Republican candidate for city clerk-trea-surer is Curtis Paul Jones, not Curtis O. Jones, as was stated in the Daily Democrat Tuesday. ‘ ' - ' ' ' " ’ T ' 11 1
