Argentine Swimmer Wins Channel Race DOVER, England <UPI) — Ar-i gentine swimmer Alfredo Cama-] rero won the international cross- 1 channel race today, making the grueling 22-mile swim across the choppy English Channel in 11 hours, 45 minutes and 26 seconds. The race was marred by a chaotic start and fears for a time that one of the swimmers had! lost his life. The missing swimmer, Primo Ferreira of Portugal, turned up safe and sound in a French hotel. He had turned around and swum iback to Calais, after his escort boat lost track of him two hours | after the pre-dawn start in the race from Cap Gris Nez, France. Sixteen of the 38 registered l swimmers failed even to get started because of a foul-up in escort boat arrangements and the belief the condition of the channel today made their chances hopeless. Camarero's victory in the cross-channel race, organized by promoter Billy Butlin, brings him the top prize of $1,400. Choppy seas, the mixup in escort arrangements, and the cold: of the early morning darkness j combined to make a mess of the I annual race. I Six of the 22 swimmers who did • get off the French beach gave i up soon after the start. After about 10 hours, Camarero, | a 23 - year -old salesman from i Buenos Aires, was reported well ahead of the dwindling field of swimmers. The remaining American entries in the annual race, Greta Anderson and Myra Thompson, both of Long Beach, Calif., were reported unofficially to be well up with the leaders. Paul Herron. 38. Sacramento, Calif., was forced to! drop out half way across because’ of cramps. I I Ask Marion County 1 Court Judge Cited INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) —A Chicago labor attorney and two un-' ion officers filed a petition with the Indiana Supreme Court late, Wednesday asking that Marion j Circuit Judge John L. Niblack be j cited for contempt of the high court. The petition was filed shortly after Niblack quashed warrants and ordered the release of the three and a picket. The two union officials and the picket were arrested on hte warrants earlier in the day. A fourth warrant, also quashed, named Chicago labor attorney Bernard Mamet with whom Niblack has conducted a running legal battle. The Indiana Supreme Court earlier ordered Niblack to withdraw from the case but Niblack ordered the warrants served anyway because he said the high court did not specifically order them quashed. Arrested were Wesley Taylor, president of the Marion County Building Trades Council; George S. Shaner, council secretary, and Everett Sarley, a picket. It was Shaner’s second arrest in as many days. He was arrested I Tuesday and held for two hoi I s but released after an attorney for the union arrived with a copy of a I writ issued Monday by Supreme Court Judge Frederick Landis which ordered Niblack to proc' -d| I no further in the case.
