Schools In Session v . The painting of the word “SCHOOL” in large letters around the Lincoln school Tuesday warned many motorists that “school days” are not far away. Many of the younger pupils will also be suffering “school daze’,, having been away all summer. They will be excited, jumpy, and full of fun, visiting with little friends they haven’t seen all summer. So remember that schools all around us are now starting, and drive extra cautiously. A careless moment could result in years and years of mental anguish over the death or mutilation of a child. • • • • Another Weekend Apparently the number of shocking, needless deaths from traffic accidents during the past few weekends has finally soaked through, as motorists let one weekend slip by without killing off any of their friends or neighbors. But many are still not taking their privilege of driving very seriously. Apparently they believe that everyone has the right ’to drive, regardless of how seriously he takes it. This is not true, as many have found out. People in such a hurry that they can not wait for safety are much better off walking than driving. They will get there faster in the long-rifn, without an accideant. Sure, driving is fun for a teenager, but remember — it’s just as much fun all year ’round, and it would be no fun at all if you lost your driving privilege just for the pleasure of dragging or squealing your tires. The police know what is going on — and their job is to protect all of the population. Sooner or later you will lose your privilege to drive if you use it recklessly — either by death or by legal action. Darwin’s theory cpncerning natural selectivity, that stupid animals lose their lives, leaving the smart ones to survive, applies to motorists, too. The smart motorist obeys all traffic laws, realizing that they are enforced to protect everyone; the foolish motorist or passenger is killed by violating safe conduct rules, or by riding with someone who violates them. * A,.
