I HrH* •’£ a. ' ’ A'jjj* >t ■ -., ■<>« * ■ ” ■ t i FIRST PAGE— Decatur postmaster Leo Kirsch sells the first page of the newly released soil conservation stamps to Adams district supervisor chairman Herman Bulmahn earlier today as the stamps go on sale throughout the country. The first of 120 million of the stamps went on sale at the soil conservation society's meeting at Rapid City, S. D., where Mr. and Mrs. Fred Housel, of the Decatur SCS office, are attending the conference. Hie new stamp is an unusual one in the annals of special commemorative issues as it celebrates no anniversary and honors no man. It recognizes, however, the American farmer, rancher and government which is striving to protect our most valuable resource soil. Philatelists, or stamp collectors, who wish to obtain “first day covers” of the new Stamp issue are advised to contact Kirsch for details. The black and white reproduction of the stamp pictured above pprtryas a modern conservation farm. Grasses in the rolling pasture prevent soil erosion and conserve moisture. A farm pond, lower right, provides water for domestic and livestock use, for fire protection, for wildlife, and recreational purposes. Contour stripcropping, and rotation systems, left and right center, include grasses and cultivated crops in alternating bands. The grassed strips cacth and hold soil that may move out of cultivated strips during rainstorms, and they increase moisture insoak.
O O Household Scrapbook | By ROBERTA LEE | O — O Cleaning Copper Copper utensils can be nicely cleaned if you will mix a cupful of flour and a tablespoon of salt to a paste with some vinegar, then rub this over the aricle \vith a soft cloth, and polish with a bit of flannel or chamois. Paint on Windows Paint spots on your windewpanes can be removed by soaking the glass with some hot vinegar, giving this a few minutes to soak in, then rubbing or scraping the paint off. Perspiration Odor Perspiration odor in men's woolen shirts can be removed by adding a little vinegar to the rinse water, after the usual laundering. Lipstick Economy Dig your worn-down lipsticks out of their tubes with a pin, and save them until you've collected five or six. Then melt these pieces together, pour the molten stuff back into one of the tubes, let cool in the refrigerator, and presto—you have a new lipstick!
