CREAMED COMMENTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON. A New Spirit for a Renewed People, Joel 1:15-20; 2:12-13, 21-23, 28-29, for Sunday, August 30. Ibe message of the prophet, Joel probably delivered about the year 400 8.C., contains many truths equally pertinent today. One disaster after another nad fallen upon the Israelites. Caught in the middle of revolutionary world movements, they paid tribute to first one overlord and then another, their crowning disaster being the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians in 586 B. C. followed by the long exile. Their spiritual leaders and prophets impressed upon them their own guilt and need for repentance that would result in a throughgoiog moral charge. V. 15. “Alas for the day! for the day of the Lord Is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.’’ The day of the Lord refers to a day of judgement Which the prophet sonsiders near at hand, the scourge of locusts symbolizing a divine warning which should lead to repentance. Joel sees the plague as a direct act of God to remind them of the wrath and power of the Almighty toward GORDON’S Western Auto Store AUTO PARTS—ACCESSORIES HOME APPLIANCES “Lowest Prices In Town” 152 N. 2nd Decatur BEGUN’S Clothing Store Far Men and Boys Phone 3-3208 IDEAL DAIRY Restaurant - OUR SPECIALTIES - Short Orders and Fountain Service. a nation that seemed to be forgetting Him. Vs. 16-18. “Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea joy and gladness from the house of our God? . . .The seed Ls rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down: for the corn is withered.. . How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are preplexed, because they have no pasture; yea the flocks of sheep are made desolate.” The locusts had eaten the food, so no offering could be presented in the temple; the seed had shriveled because of the drought, the storehouses were in ruin, and the cattle and beasts suffered by the plague as well as the people. Vs. 19. 20. “O Lord, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field. . The beasts, of the field also cry unto thee; for the river of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.” There was no other source of help but God in those trying times. The heat of thes un withered the trees and fields. Even the animals were suffering from lack of Water. This verse is a mute appeal to God to relieve their suffering. Vs. 172. 13. “Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping. and with mourning... .And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. The people’s repentance must be sincere and heart-felt, not a matter of going through the traditional forms of repentance, such as rending their garments, fasting, weeping and mourning. Joel s hope for God's forgiveness is based on the character of God and the fact His attitude changes as men repent. They were asked to weep and mourn, not to placate an angry God, but in sincere grief for their sins. If they would turn to God in repentance, He would show mercy and kindness, not judgement and anger. Vs. 21-23. “Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things... Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wildernetss do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength. . .Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for the hath given you the former rain moderately. and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.” The calamity has now passed, the locusts are gone, the coming of rain has restored fertility to the fields, the animals are no longer suffering. Just as the prophet saw disaster as. punishment, he sees the return of prosperity as restoration to God s favor The rains would come in season and restore normacy and Pr ° S Vs F 29. “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will P 011 !* out my spirit upon all Resh; an vour sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions : .. And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.” Eventually all classes of mankind would have insight into divine truth and express it as the Spirit of God prompted. They would have spiritual as well as material blessings culminating m the Day of Pentecost. — Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Divison of Christian Education, National Councd of the Churches of Christ m the U. Sunday should be a time dedi-i , cated to thought and reverence. It is like a stile between the fields , of toil, where we can pray, praise and mediate. As we keep the Sabbath, we save the last best hope by which man rises. Our Sabbaths should be hills of joy and light in God’s presence: U properly observed, the Sabbath provides a rest from toil, a time to hear God s Word proclaimed, an occasion for the enjoyment of Christian fellowship in the church, the house of God, and of most importance, a time to restore our perspective, renew our courage, gain that spiritual strength so necessary to meet Worship service at 10:30.
