11,500 Hoosiers Jobless From Strike INDIANAPOLIS (UPD-A state official estimated today that the steel strike has idled 11,500 Hoosiers other than steelworkers, including more than 6,000 construction workers. William C. Stalnaker, Indiana employment security director.
said more than half of the idle workers, not including steelworkers. are construction workers who regularly were employed inside the struck mills or on other steel company projects. He said the railroad industry also was hard hit and nearly 3,200 layoffs were reported in that industry. Stalnaker said about 2,550 of the 39,559 unemployment insurance claims filed last week were from persons made jobless by the strike. | The number of new claims filed

Machetes Ending Teapot Tempest PORT AL PRINCE, Haiti (UPI) , —The government today enlisted the aid of thousands of peasants armed with machetes to hunt down 30 bearded men who invaded southwestern Haiti. Pierre St. Ange, a pro-govern-ment National, Assemblyman from
Jeremie, in southwestern Haiti, admitted the invasion force had evaded government troops so far. “I have distributed thousands of machetes to my people and sent them after the invaders," St. Ange said. The Dominican Republic, which shares the Caribbean island of Hispianola with Haiti, offered to help. It was announced In Ciudad Trujillo that Dominican President Hector B. Trujillo informed Haitian President Francois Duvalier
he would extend his “full cooperation" in dealing with the invasion. There was no immediate indication Haiti would accept Dominican aid. Classic And Others - Need New Bowlers The opening meeting of the Classic bowling league will take place Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Mies Recreation. The secretary announced today that an oneteam opening exists. An average of 830 pins or better is required to enter this league. AU captains and interested persons are-invited to the Thursday meeting. Other openings in Mies Recreation leagues are: the Rural league, which bowls on Wednesday evenings at 9 p.m,: the Merchants league, 6:30 p.m., Tuesdays, and the Sportsman league, 9 p.m. on Fridays. Purdue Graduates Local Students Two Adams county students were among the 628 students who completed work for degrees in the 1959 summer session at Purdue university, according to the list' announced by the office of the registrar. This total included 61 candidates for the doctor of philosophy degree, 260 for x the various master’s degrees and 307 for the baccalaureate degree in various subject-matter areas. Following a 10-day period for checking that all degree requirements are fully met, diplomas are mailed to these summer graduates. They are- included as members of the 1960 graduating class and may return, if they so elect, for the public conferring of their degree at the annual compencement excerises next June. Adams county students in this group, and the degree earned, are Elizabeth M. Doehrman Graef, R. 1, Dectur, bachelor of science, and William B. Hale, Geneva, master at science in engineering.
