Room Air Conditioner May Cool Small Homo Tests have shown that a single 1-ton or m-ton room air conditioner often can comfortably cool a small house of about 1,000 square feet of living space if the house is thickly insulated with mineral wool and has an inexpensive system for circulating air from room to room. RAISED PANELING Hardwood plywood squares mounted on a furring framework can be used to create the effect of raised paneling, giving added interest to a room. Such an arrangement is most effective above a fireplace or on walls which separate the living room from other areas, according to leading decorators.

Costs of House Painting Inspire Many Innovations
New ideas in house painting are offsetting the high cost of this operation for the most successful home builders, with a result that many home buyers are now assured of lower maintenance costs. The Construction Research Bureau, national clearing house for building information, reports that spray painting and materials needing no paint are being more widely used by builders who have found that painting can call for almost as many man-hours on an average project as are needed for carpenters. “Quick - drying hot spray painting in one coat is giving results superior to three coats of brushapplied paint,” the Bureau says. “At the same time, smart bui'ders cut down their needs for paint by using as much prefinished material as possible. The home owner gets future dividends out of this practice by being relieved of periodic refinishing. “Am;ng prefinished details proving the most popular are doors, natural wood wall paneling, kitchen cabinets, some acoustical ceilings and, most important, resilient floor coverings throughout the house, si ch as the new Ker.tln vinyl-asb s’os and pure viny' tiles.” The Bureau calls tae painting of concrete floors one of the most troublerorre practices among maintenance problems. Natural lime and mineral salts in concn te, activated l>y dampnes, drawn up by capillar.ty. frequently cn.se such paint to loosen, flake off and sitek to heels. “Recent improvements in resilient floor covering have made concrete floors highly desirable,” the bureau adds. “A few years ago only asphalt tile was reliable over concrete below the ground level. With color and pattern extending all the way through Kentile asphalt tile, big advantages were obtained over old-fashioned fabricback materials, which had tended to bulge, crack and wear ly“Today’s new adhesives have widened the choice of resilient floorings for concrete in any location. Brighter hued Kentile vinylasbestos has now been made practicable even for basement floors.”

Other places where builders are improving thir product while reducing painting labor are listed by the bureau. These include the use of only pre - primed lumber wherever paint will be used, such as clapboards. One builder reported savings of $75 per house by the use of dipped or sprayed siding. He contends that any material used on the outside of a house should be ready for its final coat of paint when it is put into place. Automatic Heat Frees Basements For Fun You can thank the introduction of oil and gas as heating fuels for the widespread popularity of basement recreation rooms, says the Better Basement Institute. Before automatic heating plants, it says, large areas of the basement were set apart for coal storage and little room was left for other purposes. One feature of old-type homes has remained equally necessary today, the institute says. That is the hatchway covering the steps from the basement to the grade. Hatchways were needed in the coal-burning days to enable the home-owner' to bring ashes out doors. They are even more important today to permit family members to use the recreation room without disturbing the rest of the household and to provide easy, safe access to the laundry and the workshop by home owners and service men. Science has caught up with the hatchway, however, because the old wood-type product has been replaced by a prefabricated steel unit which is burglarproof and maintenance-free. Measure Water In Pail When mixing concrete, make sure that the proper amount of water is added to obtain the proper consistency. A galvanized steel pail, marked on the inside at different heights to indicate quarts and gallons, is a handy way to measure water.

Mirrored doors to the sides of the handy counter-top close the opening when not in use. and brighten both rooms.
When it comes to serving everyday family meals or entertaining friends for dinner, a pass-through between the kitchen and dining room will save busy homemakers a lot of tiring steps. Especially welcome in older homes where these two muchused areas are usually completely separated by a wall, a pass-through can save as many as half the steps otherwise needed to put a meal on the table. The counter-top of the passthrough becomes a handy place to set several dishes which can then be moved to the table without having to carry them, two at a time, through the door. In planning the dimensions of a pass-through, the size of the wall will govern its width, but generally the space between three two-by-four wall uprights is plenty, and is available in most instances. The overall depth of the countertop can be extended on the kitchen side to provide extra work area. By increasing the height of the opening both above and below the actual waist-level which is the most comfortable for the countertop, the extra spacq provided can be made into attractive storage cupboards for china and glassware. Shelves can be installed the width of the opening and enclosed on one or both sides of the wall with sliding plate or patterned glass doors mounted in grooves milled in the outer facing of the framework. These glass panels will provide dust-free storage while making the entire unit bright and attractive. Closing the pass-through when not in use is accomplished with hinged doors mounted one on each side of the opening an<| swinging towards the middle. For more appeal and easy cleaning, it is suggested that both sides of these doors be covered with panels of fine plate glass mirror which will increase the available

O■ " Q Household Scrapbook By ROBERTA LEE I o — o Scratched Plastic Scratches on an unbreakable plastic watch crystal can often be polished off with some acetone or fingernail polish remover. Use the liquid sparingly, applying it with a small wad of soft cloth. Mildewed Rugs To recondition mildewed rugs, sponge the offending spots with a thick soapsuds or rug shompoo, remove the soap with a damp rag. and dry the rug in the sun. Reconditioned Coconut If some of your shreded coconut has become hard and tough, try heating it over some hot water. Clean Paint Brushes After Each Use Paint brushes need cleaning after each use. If paint, varnish or shellac is allowed to dry in a brush, it never again is free of dried flecks. To clean, scrape off excess paint from the brush, against the edge of the can. Then swipe back and forth on newspapers. Wash several times in the liquid used as a thinner. Then, wash the brush in soap or detergent suds, rinse and dry. Easy To Make Mortar Small batches of mortar or concrete for pointnig and patching jobs can be mixed quickly in a clean, inverted lid of a galvanized steel garbage can. Set the inverted iid in the open garbage can, a nail keg or box when mixing the batch. Designed For Purpose The deep “foot” on the bottom of galvanized steel garbage cans keeps* the bottom of the container off the ground and prevents corrosion and rust.
