Social Security Quiz' Answers Many Queries

(Editor’s note: Do you have any questions about social security? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published regularly.) r 1. Q.—l became disabled in October, 1958. I recently filed for disability benefits. Will they be paid retroactively to October 1958 when I became disabled? A—No, they will not. A full 6 month period of disability must precede the month of payment. If your claim is approved, payment will begin with May, 1959. 2. Q.—l am 68 years old. What determines the number of checks I can receive this year if I make over $1200? A.—lt will depend on the amount of your earnings during this calendar year and the months you work. In any event you will be eligible for a payment for any month you do not earn over SIOO in employment or you do not work in self-employment. 3. Q—l’m a woman worker and stopped working when I became severely disabled in January, 1959. I will be 65 in October, 1959. For many years I’ve been on a salary of $275 a month. Should I apply for disability insurance benefits or for regular old age insurance benefits as a woman worker? A—You will have to decide this question. The facts in your case are as follows: The disability insurance benefit would be SIOO first payable in August 1959 because of a six-month waiting period. This will total SSOO during 1959. The tegular retirement at age 65, payable in October, 1959, would be SIOO or S3OO for 1959. The reduced old age insurance benefit would be $95 starting with January, 1959. Amount total sll4O for 1959. If you take the disability insurance benefits you lose 7 months at $95 or $665; but you would get this back at $5 a month in 133 months. In other words, you must live 11 years to recover what you would lose by taking the disability insurance benefits. The choice is up to you. 4. Q—l am taking care of children in my own home. How much must I make during the year before I pay self-employment social security tax? * A—You must have net earnings of at least S4OO or more during the taxable year before you pay self-employment tax and can receive credit for your earnings. 5. Q—ls a man has earnings over $4200 every year through 1958 and over S4BOO in 1959, what would his social security benefit be in January, 1960, and how do you figure it? A—The years 1951 through 1959 are used in figuring the benefit. Five low years are dropped. This leaves three $4200 years and one S4BOO year which produces an average monthly wage of $362. The old age insurance benefit based on this average is sll9 per month. 6. Q—l get reduced wife’s benefits. Will my widow’s benefits be reduced in the event of my husband's death? A—The widow is entitled to % of the husband's benefit. Her payments are not reduced. 7. Q—-My benefit as a wife is now $40.20 since I started drawing when 1 was 62. If my husband dies, how much would I draw as a widow? A—ls you receive $40.20 per month as a wife who applied at age 62, your husband’s payment is now about $lO7. The widow receives % of her husband’s amount and it is not reduced even if she applied as a wife at 62. In your case, a widow’s payment would be about $80.30 per month. 8. Q—l was 54 years old in January and worked under social security steadily from January. 1937, through February, 1945. Will I be eligible for social security benefits at age 62? A—ls you have quarters of coverage for all the 8 years and 2 months you worked, you are fully insured and will be eligible for benefits at age 62. Homemade Floor Wax An economical floor wax, which is especially good on hardwood floors, can be made from half a cake of melted paraffin and a cupful of turpentine.

Pipe Company To Close Operations The Indiana-Ohio Pipe company, salvaging pipe from various abandoned lines in this area for the past 16 months, will close operations in Decatur next Wednesday, B. Bender, president, announced today. Originally Bender intended to operate from Decatur for about six weeks, but after he had salvaked the local pipe, he began hauling in pipe, rather than move his headquarters. In the past few months he has processed 170 truckloads and 228 carloads of Ohio pipe valued at $350,000. Bender stated that he enjoyed working in Deca-, tur very much, and hopes to be i able to return to the community when conditions warrant it. Child Injured When Hit By Automobile Sheriff’s police reported a personal injury accident involving a 15-month-old girl, who sustained a severe abrasion to the left side of her forehead when struck by an automobile that was trying to avoid hitting her. Debra Jo Manley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Manley, of route 6, Decatur, suffered the injury Friday night at 7:30 o’clock about a mile south of Pleasant Mills on U. S. 33. Clarence E. Westgerden, 37, of Fort Recovery, 0., told police that he saw the child step into the street from behind a parked car. The Westgerden vehicle skidded and turned broadside, striking the child. Police said that the broadside blow probably saved her life. Incidentally, the parked car was that of a neighbor who had sighted the little girl walking around and was about to pick her up and take her home. Before he could get out of his car, the accident occurred. Police said that the infant romped 1 around the house after treatment by a physician. ° Household Scrapbook I By ROBERTA LEE I O O Crystal Glassware The best way to clean crystal glassware is to use newspaper.
