Secretary Arthur S. Flemming of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare told a news conference that it was “a conservative estimate.” When actual enrollment figures are complete, he said, “it would not be at all surprising to find that the classroom shortage is closer to 140,000. Jack Webb Portrays Editor In Movie HOLLYWOOD (UPD — Jack Webb, who became a hero to the world's cops via his “Dragnet” TV series, may well be enshrined by newspapermen for his portrayal of a managing editor in his newest movie. As producer, star and director of the film, taut-voiced, deadpanned Webb is determined to portray newspapermen and their millieu accurately. As a starter, he exactly duplicated the city room of the Los Angeles Examiner on a soundstage at Revue Studios. Then he studied the faces and mannerisms of dozens of local newsmen to give credenqetbhis casting. “I’m trying to give the effect of taking a wall away from any city room in the country to let audiences look inside,” Jack explained. “There won’t be a single movie cliche about newspapers. No one will rush in shouting, ’Stop the presses.’ And the editor doesn’t say, “I’ve got a story that’ll bust this town wide open.’ Also out are reporters with press cards stuck in their hat bands.” Webb’s picture, “ —30—,” isn't intended to glamorize the working press. He’s wrapping the personal life of the assistant managing editor around a head-lined story involving his own family. At lunchtime, Webb hurried to a projection room to see the previous day's rushes. In the darkened, miniature theater he sat next to his film editor and cutter, giving instructions as the rough - cut scenes flashed on and off the screen. “I'm using all the experience and tricks I learned during ‘Dragnet’,” he said. “We have a ,20-day shooting schedule, and with luck we’ll bring it in ahead of schedule.” He objected to several sequences as the reel unfolded the story. “I don’t like the shot where you cut to me,” he told his lieutenants. “Keep the action of the city editor and the copy boy. It’ll play for laughs. The audience will assume I’ve left my desk to join them. There's no reason to show me in the action. It might spoil the laugh.”
