Mrs. Coya Knutson Starts New Career By GAY PAULEY UPI Women’s Editor NEW YORK (UPD — Coya Knutson is not coming home to her husband in Minnesota — at least not for a while. The former Democratic congresswoman has taken up residence and a new career in New York. Mrs. Knutson, 46, is associate producer, educational director and member of the board of directors of “The Magicat Theater,” which produces television films for children. , “In ,3 just going back to some of the things I did before I got into politics,” she said in an interview. The record shows Mrs. Knutson taught high school for 16 years. "It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said, speaking of the “Coya, come home” incident which made national headlines a year ago. During her re - election campaign, her husband, Andrew, who had operated a small hotel and restaurant in the couple's hometown of Oklee, Minn., issued a public plea to his blond, blue-eyed wife, whom he married in 1940. He demanded that Mrs. Knutson leave Congress and come home —or else. Lost Last Election Knutson charged that since his wife’s election to Congress in 1954, “Our home life has deteriorated to the extent that it is practically non-existent. I want to have the happy home life that we enjoyed for many years prior to her election.” Later, he softened his demands: Mrs. Knutson could stay in Congress if she would just get rid of her executive secretary, Bill Kjeldahl, 30. He charged “the decisions made in Coya’s office are not hers, but Kjeldahl’s.” In the last congressional elections, Mrs. Knudsen lost to Republican Odin Langen. Kjeldahl, she said, is now in Minnesota working as an announcer at station KLIZ. She said the headlines helped defeat her. “An unhealthy group back home used my husband, that is all,” said Mrs. Knutson. “But they did me a favor; they catapulted me into a work I love. God moves in mysterious ways 99 I asked her about her relations with her husband now. “Surely we are incompatible, ’ she said. “But now I am where I s may be able to financially help him...to. help him find his place in life." Still A Man’s World Will there be a divorce? “I don’t know,” she said. "Die couple has one son, Terence, 19. Mrs. Knutson said that she feels no bitterness because of her political defeat. "Certainly I will go back to Minnesota from time to time...l own property there.” "I am out of active politics,” she said, “but I always will be interested. The competition in poitics is rough, my dear. It’s still a man’s world.” "I don’t think I’ll miss Washington,” she said. “The contacts in this job will be national and international...and less nose to the grindstone than in Washigton. Fewer personal pressures. “But I have to work,” said the effervescent Mrs. Knutson, “Work is my first name.” The television series differs from the usual animated cartoons because the characters are sculptured and look three-dimension-al. The technique is the brainchild of Lou Bunin, who is the boss of Punch Films Corp. Punch owns "Magicat” and one of its backers is Mrs. Jeane Dixon, Washington real estate agent and along-time prognosticator of world events. Her cat “Mike,” a pretty well known character around the capital, inspired the series. Mrs. Knutson said the films, with animal characters, will be educational in nature — “but the message wil be subtle.” “This is one opportunity in many, many lifetimes.” MILNER HOTELS MILNER MILNER “450” “SSO” • Modera • The “650" Feraitaro bes more • Freshly • Air Coadl* Decorated Honed Room Rooms _ wj,.- • free Tele* • New Well io vision Wall Carpets • Modera Tile moraine ■ott paper • Cleat 0 Complete Comfortable betel Rooms service Price $4.50 Price $5 JO For The Thrifty ECONOMY PRICES Write sow lor your credit cord.
