I Jerry Barber > Takes Lead In PGA Tourney I MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) — Little . Jerry -Barber, who is a master at approaching and putting, and Burly Mike Souchak. a terror from tee to green; led the field in the third round of the PGA golf championship today with the 43-year-old Californian pacing the former Duke football star by two ■ strokes. Barber, who stands only five . feet five, and weighs only 138 pounds “when I’m soaking wet,” shot one of the great rounds in golfing history Friday, carding a ‘ five under par 65, to give him a! two-round total of 134. Big Mike, i who is six feet and 200 pounds, ‘ had come in a couple of hours | earlier with a 33-34—67 for a total. I of 136. 1 From the race-horse contest! ! Thursday when Barber and, Souchak were among nine players tied for the lead with one under par 69’s Friday play separated the field in a more normal tournament manner. While Barber and Souchak were ’■ the golfers to beat, there were I nine players still in there with a 1 good chance and some others with ’ an outside crack at it. I Doug Sanders, who fashioned a second round 66, was four strokes off the pace with a 138 while an-, ! other stroke back were defending champion Dow Finsterwald, with 1 a second round 68, and Gene s Littler, who had a second round 1 par 70 to go with his opening 69. At 140 came Cary Middlecoff, i 1 two-time winner of the U. S., Open, current U. S. Open king • Billy Casper and Lionel Hebert, I who won the PGA title when the tournament was at match play in, 1957. Walter Burkemo, another for-' mer champ of this tourney, Fred Hawkins and Bob Goalby were at 141. In the 142 bracket, but needing to get as hot as the weather which has baked the 6,580-yard Minneapolis Golf Club course, if I they are to get back into the! running, were the likes of Art Wall, Bin Ogden, Chuck Klein, Ken Venturi. Jay Hebert and Buster Cupit. Jackie Burke an Bob Rosburg were among those at 143 and Sam .Snead, Arnold Palmer, Doug Ford and Chick Harbert were included in those brackets at 44. “I was putting and approaching 'like crazy," said Barber. He used I Ohly 10 putts for nine holes as he
turned the front nine in 30, five under par—and one of the best nines ever recorded in a major tournament. “I’ve come close to that score in club matches, but never in a big one,” grinned the bespectacled Barber. One of the shots he got his greatest kick out of was on the 443-yard seventh hole where he dubbed his drive and left his approach 60 yards short of the pin. But he chipped in for a birdie. Jerry had five birdies on the front nine, and two more on the back nine. But coming home, he had two b / '"cvs “I just hope I can keep it up,” he said. Trade it a good town — Decatur
