Junior Legion Team Is Edged Out By Celina

A rugged Celina, 0., Junior Legion team won the rubber fame of the series with Decatur’s Legion squad, but not before the local lads put on a thrilling ninth inning rally, pulling within one run of the Ohioans. Celina won, 7-6, Wednesday night at Worthman field in a tune-up for tourney play which starts this week-end throughout the country. Jim Gay, pinch-hitting despite an injured hand, apparently topped Bob Dro’s “longest ball hit at Worthman” last night with a tremendous blast into straighaway left field, high into an oak tree. The ball bounded back into play and Gay was held to a two-run triple. His 400-foot smash put Decatur two runs back at 7-5. He later scored on a dropped third strike.

Harley Wolfe absorbed his first loss in Legion play although he struck out eight in the first three innings he pitched. He gave up what proved to be the winning marker when called back in from left field to finish out the seventh inning. John Cowan started for Decatur, hurling three innings of no-hit, no-walk ball, striking out two. Tom Grabill finished up for Decatur, giving up three runs on three hits, but his mates were guilty of two costly errors and several errors of omission.

Decatur emptied its bench, pointing to the Legion tourney this week-end at Ligonier-Wawaka. The local team struck first, getting two in the fourth on Steve Marbach’s sacrifice fly and Steve Blythe’s double after Denny Ahr walked and Wolfe got the first of two doubles. They added another in the fifth on Grabill’s single and Wolfe’s double to short right, and things looked well under control as Wolfe blew fast balls by eight Celina batters. The Celina team, bolstered by five boys from St. Mary's, who will not have a Legion team next season, jumped all over Rudy Kleinknight's left-handed slants to tie the score when Gail Grabill and Jim Cowens, subbing for coach Bill McColly, called Wolfe back in to put out the fire. The .rest out in left field appeared to do Wolfe Mittle good as he was greeted by a Single and a booming triple to right center. Decatur’s rally in the ninth started when Cowan drew a pass and advanced to third on a passed ball. Bobby Walters also walked, setting the stage for the injured Gay. He boomed a knee-high fast ball out of the park, but according to ground rules, any ball hitting a tree on the perimeter of the field remains in play if it rebounds in the playing area. Marbach took first on the dropped third strike, scoring Gay. The hopes of about 100 Decatur fans went glimmering as the Celina first sacker scooped up a throw in the dirt from his third baseman on Fred Kauffman’s grounder. The tourney starts at 1 p. m. Saturday with Decatur facing Orland at Wawaka. The second game is at 4 p. m. either at Wawaka or Ligonier. If Decatur wins, they play at Ligonier. Ligonier meets Angola in the other opener at its home field at 1 p. m. Hie losers meet at Wawaka at 4 p. m.

Dodgers Take Over Lead In National Loop By MILTON RICHMAN United Press International It was a tough fight, ma. but the Dodgers finally made it to the top of the heap with the aid of Roger (Skinny) Craig, who has put them in line for the fattest World Series payoff ever. Craig, a sore - armed case no one would’ve given a plugged nickel for three months ago, pitched the Dodgers into first place for the first time since May 12th by beating the Pirates, 2-0, Wednesday night The victory had the Dodgers > rubbing their hands oo a number of counts. Primarily, of course, it brought them visions of a World Series which could mean as much perhaps as $15,000 per man. Then, too, it meant that the six-foot-four, 189-pound Craig could be counted on as a key man in the stretch run. Craig Fans Seven Craig, whose combined wonlost total with Los Angeles and St. Paul was 7-18 last year, struck out seven Pittsburgh batters and allowed only six hits in fashioning his sixth victory last night against only two losses. Until the eighth inning, Craig and Vem Law both pitched scoreless ball. Then the Dodgers scored both their runs on two singles, a walk and Don Zimmer’s double. That rally dealt the Pirates their ninth straight loss and knocked the Giants out of first place. The Philies defeated the Giants, 3-1; the Braves topped the Cubs, 8-5, and the Reds routed the Cardinas, 9-2, in other National League games. Kansas City’s suddenly awakened Athletics made it 10 in a row with a 5-4 victory over Washington in the American League; Boston beat Cleveland, 4-1; Baltimore downed Detroit, 5-1, and Chicago and New York played to a 4-4 tie in a game called after six innings because of rain. Homers Fell Giants Home runs by Ed Bouchee and Gene Freese of the Phils proved the downfall of the Giants. Southpaw Johnny Antonelli yielded both homers in the fourth inning. Hank Aaron led Milwaukee to within a game of first place when he slammed a pair of homers against the Cubs. Aaron drove in three runs with his 25th and 26th homers and helped Lew Burdette to his 14th victory. Cincinnati came up with six runs in the eighth to clinch its victory over St. Louis. The Reds* eighth-inning rally was composed of five hits and three walks. Senators Drop To Cellar The Athletics tightened their hold on fourth place and handed the Senators their 11th straight setback, thus dumping them into the AL cellar. Rookie Al Schroll out-pitched Cal McLish in the Red Sox triumph over the Indians. Schroll reeled off a six-hitter and didn’t walk a man in gaining his first triumph. i The Orioles converted two errors by Tiger shortstop Coot Veal into three early runs and youngsters Jerry Walker and Milt Pappas did the rest with a combined six-hit victory. Yogi Berra’s 13th home run of the season with one on in file sixth earned the Yankees their rain - abbreviated stalemate with the White Sox. The tie game, coupled with Boston’s victory over Cleveland, increased the White Sox* lead to a full game over the second-place Indians. Federation League Playoffs Sunday Playoffs in the Senior Federation league will open Sunday, with two games scheduled, both at 2 o’clock. Klenks of Decatur will meet the Colonial Oilers, league champions, at the State School diamond In Fort Wayne, and AFL-CIO will meet the Tri-City Tigers at Ashley. In last night’s scheduled game. Colonial OU blanked Klenks, 10-0. at Dwenger park in Fort Wayne. “ Ortlieb limited Decatur to three hits.
