DECATUR DAILY
Weather Forecast Like Broken Record United Press International The Indiana weather forecast sounded like a broken record today—more humidity, scattered showers and thundershowers, at least through Friday. Heavy rains lashed portions of Hoosierland for the second straight day, with Anderson’s 2.38 inches, most of it late Tuesday, causing a flash flood in the downtown district. Scottsburg, which reported 1% inches Tuesday, added another 1.78 inches in the 24-hour perior which ended at 7 a.m. today. Shelbyville soaked up 1.06 inches, while Columbus and South Bend had better than half an inch. The five-day outlook for the period ending Monday called for up to an inch of rain “and locally more” as scattered thundershowers tonight, Thursday, south and central Friday, and another round of scattered thundershowers again likely around Monday. The storm in Anderson late Tuesday was accompanied by lightning, knocking out power lines and leaving about 2,000 homes without electricity temporarily. No immediate change was predicted from partly cloudy, continued warm and humid conditions. The high today was expected to equal Tuesday’s maximum of 91 at Evansville, it might even climb a notch or two higher. Overnight readings were slated to hover in sweltering 70s for at least the next couple of days. Temperatures during the next five times should be normal, the weatherman said, ranging from the high 80s to around 90 at their highest points. SI,OOO is Reported Stolen From Church CROWN POINT, Ind. (UPI) - Burglars forced their way into the Independence Hill Presbyterian Church Monday and stole SI,OOO in t the church building fund, church - officials reported. 1 0 \ Matthew Welsh Is 1 ’ Officially In Race * INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Matr thew Welsh officially had his hat r in the gubernatorial ring today although he has beeta running unofficially for Democratic nominaj tion to the office almost since the last state convention. ; A folder titled, "Here’s how you I can help nominate and ‘elect Matr thew E. Welsh Governor of Indi- . ana,” went into the mails through- [ out the state this week. I The folders were published by L the Knox County Democratic Central Committee in Welsh’s home > county and contained an open letter from J. Manfred Core, county . chairman, urging volunteers to fill > out a coupon and return it to him. The folder cites the past accomplishments of the Vincennes attor- . ney, who was Democratic floor . leader of the Indiana Senate in 1957 and 1959. He first served in , the Indiana House of Representatives in 1940 and again in 1942. In , 1950 he was named U.S. district attorney by President Truman. [ He has been a member of the ; state senate since 1954. Hie direct appeal at grassroots ■ level followed the format used by j U.S. Sen. Vance Hartke in gaining t his nomination and election. The early start at campaigning brought some criticism from other Democratic hopefuls that Welsh is focussing attention on the 1960 state elections at a time the party should be concentrating on the 1959 mayorality campaign. > ' CALL US FOR GRAIN FRICKS ■ BEFORE SELLING. To Limit Picketing Al Whiting Refinery WHITING, Ind. (UPD-Striking workers have agreed to limit the number of pickets and not block the gates of the Whiting refinery, Standard Oil Company's largest. Judge Felix A. Kaul signed a stipulation agreed to by attorneys for Standard and the Independent Petroleum Workers of America, barring mass picketing at the struck plant, Kaul said the agreement. which limits pickets to four at each gate, had the effect of a court order. The company went to court Tuesday charging that striking workers kept non-strikers from entering the plant and trucks from I leaving. About 4,800 union members went j on strike at midnight Monday in a dispute over a shorter work week and iob security. The union denied charges it was deliberately massing men at the plant gates. Any crowds there were “merely sightseers,” the union said. Standard also sought an, injunction against the police of Whiting, , East Chicago and Hammond, ac-' ; cusing them of being lax in fall- ; ing to keep the strikers in line. Whiting police said they were following a hands-off policy because alleged violations of the law were occurring on company prop- ' erty. A company spokesman said only ; about half of the 400 clerical work- 1 ers at the plant crossed picket lines Tuesday, but almost all the 900 engineering, research and administrative personnel reported for work. About 600 supervisors are living inside the plant, maintaining equipment while the strike is in progress. Federal mediator William G. Murray said no further bargain- ; ing talks were scheduled. The union walked out when the company said it could not grant a demand for a 36-hour work week at the present 40-hour pay level. The union also wanted certain guarantees against layoffs. John E. Swearingen, president of Standard of Indiana, said the issue was not wages but “whether management can continue to manage its refineries as efficiently as possible or whether it must manage as unions dictate.” Although the plant produces 3.700,000 gallons of gasoline daily. Standard said the strike would not affect its customers because other refineries will be able to fill the gap until the walkout is settled. I (y , . ■■ .... O Modern Etiquette By ROBERTA LEE I o— — a Q. Is it necessary for a bride-elect to reply to notes she has received, expressing good wishes from her friends who have seen the an- , nouncement of her engagement in the newspaper? A. While it is not necessary for her to write notes of thanks, she may telephone some of these friends and, most certainly, she should thank all those whom she meets. Q. When writing a letter or note to a brother and sister, may one address the envelope to “Miss Dorothy Morris and Brother?” A. Never. The envelope should be addressed either to the sister or the brother, but never to both. Q. Do the male members of a party at a public dinner table rise when a man stops at the table for a few words with one of the diners? A. Not unless there is a great different in age. All younger men rise for a really old gentleman.
