Budgets Announced Six departments of the county government have already submitted their budgets to the county auditor for review by the county board of commissioners. The others will be doing so this next week. The county highway department, which runs from money from the state gas tax, rather than from the property tax for the most part, is actually asking for less than last year—5379,775, as compared with $392,675. Os course, they can spend only what they receive but they have apparently submitted a very realistic budget. County roads are certainly of great interest to our citizens here. The county treasurer, Waldo Neal, has submitted a budget of $15,878 for 1960, as compared with the $15,863 approved last year by the commissioners. County coroner Ebner “Chalky” Winteregg has asked for the same amount allowed by the commissioners last year—sl,7oo. This includes salary, autopsy expenses, travel, postage, etc. The county health officer, Dr. C. William Freeby, has asked for an increase of SSO in his budget—from $1,020 to $1,070. The county recorder is asking for $12,518, as compared with $11,698 allowed a year ago. The county offices, for the third consecutive year, i are asking for increases for their deputies. The county officials had their salaries increased substantially by legislative action (the judge of the county now makes SI,OOO a month), but the deputies have not had an increase for years. They make only in the s2oo*s a month! Perhaps this year will get their much-needed increases.
