Crum had in mind when he testified about Teamster attorney Edward Bennett Williams on July 13. Chairman John L. McCleUan (D-Ark.) said he saw no point in re-opening hearings just because Crum has denied any “inference” that he charged Williams with offering a bribe to keep Crum from testifying before the committee. Crum sent the committee a sworn affidavit Thursday denying that he meant any such inference when he told the committee: “Mr. Williams and I had lunch together and Mrs. Williasm told me that Mr. (Godfrey P.) Schmidt’s fees as monitor would be paid by Friday (July 10) if I did not appear as a witness before this committee.” Crum, Schmidt’s counsel in an effort to get the Teamsters to pay the monitor $28,000 in fees, said in his affidavit that he had heard some people interpreted his testimony to mean “that a ‘bribe’ in effect was offered by Mr. Williams.” “Such inference is without any foundation whatsoever,” Crum said. “My relations with Mr. Williams...have been conducted on the highest professional level and in the best tradition of the legal profession.” Williams, obviously among those who put a strong interpretation on Crum’s testimony, replied on the spot that it was “absolutely, completely, unequivocally and unqualifiedly false.” If vou nave something to sen o’ rooms fcr rent, try a Democrat Want Ad — They bring results. Handwriting Expert Quizzed By Defense. TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (UPI) — Defense attorneys staged a long and tedious cross-examination of a handwriting expert today in an effort to discredit his testimony linking eight defendants in the nation’s biggest excise tax evasion trial with betting slips seized in a 1957 raid. Attorneys Morris Shenker and Daniel W. Davies took turns handing Howard C. Doulder, a U. S. Treasury employe and former Milwaukee policeman, each of about 300 government exhibits introduced in the record of the trial. Shenker and Davies asked Doulder each time whether he had looked at that exhibit when he made a handwriting analysis of documents in the case. The defense tactics appeared destined to delay completion of the government’s case until late today or Saturday. Another handwriting expert was due to be the prosecution’s last witness when Doulder leaves the stand. Doulder was a government witness on direct examination all day Thursday. The government introduced in evidence betting slips and summary sheets seized Nov. 29, 1957, when treasury agents raided the alleged headquarters of a nationwide, multi-million dollar betting syndicate here. The government contends the eight defendants evaded $326,000 in federal taxes on bets during a 10-week period in the fall of 1957. Doulder testified the handwriting of Leo Shaffer, Chicago matched that on 165 betting slips. He linked former Marion County Sheriff Charles (Buck) Sumner, Indianapolis, with 96 slips; Phillip Share, Las Vegas, Nev., with 84 slips; Jules Horwick, Chicago, with 77 slips and 33 summary sheets; Irwin Gordon, Las Vegas, 31 slips; E. M. Wyatt. Terre Haute, 26 sheets; James E. Tamer, Miami Beach, Fla., 10 slips, and Joseph Jacobson, Indianapolis, with 3 slips. All betting slips used in Doulder’s testimony represented bets accepted for the four days preceding the raid by T-men, the government said.
