Grade Markings Key Flush Doors ITo Intended Uses In buying doors, as in purchasing lumber on the basis of their ingarde on the basis of their intended use. Hardwood veneered flush doors produced by members of the National Woodwork Manufacturers Association, for example, come in three grades—Premium. Good and j Sound. For all practical purposes they differ only in the apperance of the face veneers. All grades must meet high performance standards. Doors of Premium grade, the (top classification, are the logical 1 selection when appearance in an important consideration. They are beautiful when naturally finished.! j Their fate veneers must be tight ( and smoothly cut. And when a face consists of more than one piece, the pieces must be matched at the joints for color and grain. Good grade doors also are attractive, though perhaps a little less uniform in appearance. When (a face .veneer of this grade is composed of more than one piece, the pieces must be sufficiently well matched at the joints and gram. Doors of Sound grade, the most economical, are perfectly well suited to installations where they are to be painted.

Crawl Space Under House Has Benefits If you're planning to build a basementless home, particularly in an area where termites may be a problem, use conventional wood floor joist construction with crawl space beneath the house. That’s your best bet for combatting the insects, according to an extension forester at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. He points out that approved floor joist construction makes it easy for the home owner to wage a successful battle against termites. Getting under the house to use termite control measures is a simple matter. Homes built on concret slabs laid on the ground, the expert says, often invite termite attacks through the tiny cracks that develop in the concrete. Termite control measures in such houses after construction are not only quite expensive but almost impossible, he adds. Conventional joist construction offers advantages in addition to those related to exterminating termites, the specialist points out. For example, the crawl space permits easy access under the floor joists for making plumbing repairs and wiring modifications. Is provides, too, for out-of-the-way placement of the heating plant and water heater. It can be used also as an inexpensive storage area for such items as garening tools and lawn furniture, children’s wagons, tricycles and the like.

Other major benefits of joist construction, lumber dealers explain. include floor warmth and foot comfort. The wood subfloors and thejtardwood finish floors generally used in conjunction with this system of construction provide a double thickness of wood, which is an excellent insulating agent that retards heat loss in winter. Wood floors, the dealers add, are easy on the feet because they possess the resiliency needed to absorb much of the body shpek produced in walking. o s o Modern Etiquette By ROBERTA LEE I o o Q. When chicken pie or something similar is served in an individual baking dish in a public eating place, how should it be eaten? A. Usually these dishes are placed beside your plate, you help yourself to half the contents at a time, allowing the remaining half to keep hot in the baking dish. Q. When approaching a revolving door with a, woman, does the man enter first so as to push the door for her, or should she precede him? A. He allows the woman to go ahead of him and, in fact, he is better able to control the revolving door if she does go first. Q. Is it necessary to write anything, besides your name, on the card that accompanies a wedding gift? A. No. Good wishes and congratulations may be offered at the reception.
Efficiency Expert'# Dream ’ Problem of Kitchen Storage Solved by Shallow Shelves FRM '■’ ES3 a ■EBlipi •* Sauk U,.r ; .- mm km Handy “cupboard” for canned goods avoids groping.
Storage of canned and packaged foods always has been a problem, even in kitchens with plenty of cabinet space. Little cans get lost behind big ones in the cavernous cabinets, and small packages hide behind larger boxes. An ideal solution has been devised by Jonathon Aley, editor of House Beautiful’s Building Manual, for the kitchen of his home in Ro way ton, Conn., shown above. Aley built rows of shallow shelves carefully sized to hold the varying array of foodstuffs, paper napkins, towels, and the like. The shelves are hidden with narrow folding doors of ponderosa pine. The panels give the appearance of rich -wood paneling when the doors are closed, and harmonize with the Colonial
Tips Given On Installation, Care Os New Flush Doors
*3 Attractive, properly installed | flush doors can do almost as much i for the appeal of a home as can smartly tailored clothes for personal grooming, decorators point out. Irf building or remodeling, therefore, the do-it-yourself enthusiast should be acquainted with the fundamentals of correct handling, installation, care and finishing of the doors. Even the let-George-do-it type of home owner who cannot generate enthusiasm for manual houshold projects should be able to recognize proper procedures. Flush doors, the decorators explain, are the kind used in many new homes today. Here are a few door “do’s and don’ts’’ from the National Woodwork Manufacturers Association, whose members include many of the nation’s leading producers of flush doors: —Wear clean canvas gloves when handling doors. Bare hands leave finger marks and soil stains. —ls you plan to have the doors on hand for more than a few days before installation, apply sealer to the top and bottom edges. i —ln moving doors it’s best to | carry them. If you drag them, be ; I sure you have the bottom ends ; | down and protected by scuff strips j I- or skid shoes. —ln hanging a door, allow about I 3/16-inch clearance for swelling of the door or the frame in extremely damp weather. —Use three hinges on each door, I set flush with the edge surface. Be sure the hinges are in a straight line to prevent distortion. —Do not subject doors to ab-l normal heat, dryness or humidityJ for prolonged periods, nor to sudden changes such as those induced by use of forced heat to dry out a . [ building. I —Do. however, allow them to I adjust in moisture content to the ■ prevailing humidity in the home.’ | This can be done by leaving them ■ in the house for four or five days ' before installation with a temper-; I ature of about 70 degrees main- | tained in the rooms. —When cleaning doors, do not use caustic or abrasive prepara- \ ■ tions. The association offers this advice regarding finishing: —Do not begin finishing opera-! ( tions during or immediately after, rainy or damp weather, or during a period of higher than average humidity. —Be sure the door surfaces are clean and dry. Sand lightly with No. 3/0 or 5/0 sandpaper, then wipe surfaces thoroughly. —Apply finish as soon as the • door is fitted. Make sure that all four edges, including top and bottom, receive at least two coats of paint, varnish or sealer after the door has been fitted and is ready! to hang. —Check with your paint or finish dealer concerning the type of finish you plan to use for the species of wood involved. Some ■ , species, oak in particular, contain ■ a chemical which reacts unfavorably with certain kinds of finish. Difficulties in this respect usually can be averted, however, by appli-
decor of the Aley home. Aley built the folding doors himself, using two stock panel doors of ponderosa pine picked up from his local building material dealer. The two doors are cut lengthwise down the center of the middle stiles. Special folding door hardware lets them open and close easily without jutting out into the room. Building material dealers also stock ready made folding panel doors, complete with hardware, and ready to install. These come in a number of sizes, and are ideal for food pantries and closets in any part of the house. Particularly delighted with her new storage space is Aley’s wife, Janet. “Now everything is in easy reach,” she says, “and I can tell at a glance what I need when I’m making out my shopping list”
l cation of sealer before the actual I finishing. —Apply at least two coats of a good grade of oil-base mixed paint, varnish or lacquer, following the manufacturer's directions carefully. Do not use a water-thinnned paint unless an oil-base prime coat first is applied. —Remember to sand the surfaces between finish coats. Observance of these approved practices, the manufacturers emphasize, will help assure the perfect operation and eye-pleasing appearance for which fine quality flush doors are noted. Insect Bites If bitten by an insect, such as bee, mosquito, yellow jacket, etc., apply ammonia water, and later on bathe with cloths that have been soaked in cold water.
