Nikita Cancels Grand Tour Os Scandinavia STOCKHOLM, Sweden (UPI) — Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev abruptly canceled his scheduled grand tour of Scandinavia today. The move was a diplomatic shocker that indicated some major turning of Soviet policy. - Word of the diplomatio.snub arrived in Scandinavian capitals barely three weeks before the start of the trip and caught officials making elaborate preparations for his arrival. An authoritative Swedish spokesman said the reason given for the cancellation in telegrams sent to Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm was “the unfriendly attitude taken by the Scandinavin press.” Newspapers in Scandinavia have engaged in a heated debate on where to draw the line between diplomatic politeness and moral indignation. Comments have included the blackest indictment of the visit invitation and editorials splashed with the names of Hungary, Berlin and Poznan. In Sweden a committee had been formed to organize a “reception with silence and nonpresence” of the Russian premier. It planed a big advertising campaign for its program. The Finnish foreign office was the last to announce the cancellation of that part of Khrushchev’s tour. The Finnish cabinet went into emergency sesion to discuss tiie situation. The cancellation set off a chain of speculation across Europe. Diplomats at the Big Four conference in Geneva said Khrushchev’s move almost without doubt indicated major developments were taking place in Soviet policy. The speculation ranged from questions about the Soviet premier’s health to predictions of some sharp turn in the cold war. Khrushchev had been expected to use the trip for his campaign to ban missiles and nuclear weapons from his Baltic flank. Soviet diplomacy had been particularly busy wooing public opinion in Norway and Denmark, two Os NATO’s most exposed members. They guard Russia’s only year-round outlet from the Baltic Sea to the Atlantic., Household Scrapbook I By ROBERTA LEE Jetty Add a teaspoon of glycerine to jellies fifteen minutes before they are finished and it will aid considerably in clearing the mixture. If shavings of paraffin are put in the bottoms of the jelly glasses before pouring in the jelly, the paraffin will melt and rise to the top, clarifying and sealing the jelly. Water Bugs The annoyance of water bugs can be eliminated by pouring a small quantity of kerosene, or a weak solution of turpentine (3 parts water to 1 part turpentine) down the chain pipe, once or twice a week. Wheat Referendum In County Thursday Polls for the wheat referendum Thursday will be open at the Berne city hall and the Adams county ASC office at Decatur from 8 a.m. to -7i p.m., not until 9 p.m. as was stated in Friday’s Democrat. Approximately 200 Adams County wheat farmers are eligible to vote in the yearly referendum, which will determine whether the farmers Want the marketing quotas to be in effect for the coming year. If at least two-thirds of the growers who have more than 15 acres of wheat for harvest approve the quotas in the referendum, the quotas will remain in effect for 1960 crop wheat, and price supports will be available to farmers who comply at at least 75 per cent of parity. If the quotas are not approved, the quotas will not be in effect, and price supports will be available to farmers who comply with their farm wheat allotments at SO per cent of parity, as directed by law. At current parity levels, that would be about sl.lß per bushel. o o Modern Etiquette I By ROBERTA LEE | o o Q. When lettuce, parsley or watercress is placed around an item of food as a garnish, is it proper to eat this? A. Certainly, it is, if the garnish is a part of your individual service. But you should not mar the appearance of a serving dish by plucking out some of its garnish.

The unusual plant, whose leaves are similar in shape to the devil’s tongue cactus, showed signs that it would bloom Thursday afternoon, and the eight blossoms, a high number for the plant, which blooms once a year, opened about 10 p. m. Thursday, Mrs. Bleeke reported this morning. Approximately 20 persons visited at the Bleeke home, Mrs. Bleeke said, to watch the opening. The plant would be about eight feet high if it were standing up straight. The leaves grow in tongue-like formations, one on the edge of the other, and the blossoms form on the end of the leaves. There are more buds on the plant right now, Mrs. Bleeke said, adding that there may be hopes for other blossoms. Mrs. Bleeke has had the plant, which is staked up now, for about 15 years.
