Social Security Quiz Many Queries
lEdfaa’i note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all (to, don't we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Dally Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which la published each Saturday.) Q. We have an adopted grandson who will receive benefits on my husband’s social security record. I have been informed by the social security office that I will be eligible for benefits because I take care of the boy. I am 63 years old. My grandson is only 15. Will the benefits I could receive now ctuse a reduction in the amount of my monthly check after I am 65? A. No. You would be receiving benefits as a mother with child, entitled to benefits, in your case—not as a wife 63 years old. Therefore when you receive wife’s benefits at age 65, there will be no reduction in the amount you will receive. Q. It’s my understanding a woman worker can apply for a reduced payment at age 62. What would the benefit be at 62 and at 65 on average earnings of $65 a week? A. Since there are 4% weeks in the average month, your benefit would be based on average wages of about $2Bl a month. The payment at age 65 is slOl a month; reduced 20%, it is SBO.BO at age 62. Q. I have a cleaning lady and learned she just reached age 65. Is it true I no longer need to send in wage reports each quarter? A. No. Taxes are due and wage reports necessary regardless of age, provided you pay your employee cash wages of at least SSO per calendar quarter. Q. I have a son, Tom, age 10, by my first marriage. When I married my second husband, John, he adopted my son. Six months after the adoption, John died. I was told I could not receive widow’s benefits until I’m 62 since John and I were married less than a year. A. No. Because John adopted your son, v ou are now eligible to Mother’s benefits and John to child’s benefits. You will also be eligible as a widow when you reach the ,-etirement age. Q. After drawing disability benefits, my condition improved. My doctor says I may return to work. Should I report and stop my benefits even though I haven’t been able to find a job? A. Yes. When you applied for disability benefits you agreed to report if you became physically able to work. You must report whether or not you are able to find a job. Q. I’m not 65 until July, 1959, but I’ve been severely disabled more than 6 months. I’m afraid to sign up for the disability payment as I don’t want to hurt my rights to my old age insurance benefits at 65. What should I do? A. Sign up for disability insurance benefits without delay. The amounts of your disability insur-

ance benefits and old age insurance benefits are the same. You can lose nothing by apply for disability insurance benefits. Q. In 1955, I lost both legs and then developed heart trouble. I’ve been reading the questions and answers in your paper. If I apply for Disability Insurance Benefits, will I get any back payments or do payments start when I apply? A. The 1958 Amendment permits back pay for as many as 12 months. In every case there must be a 6-month waiting period after the month the disability began and before the first month of payment. Q. My profit on the farm runs about SISOO a year. I'm now 65 but I will never retire. What good is social security for me? A. You lose one month’s benefit for each SBO or part of SBO earnings above SI2OO. SISOO earnings would cancel 4 benefits but you would still be eligible for 8 benefits of about S6B a month. Q. In case a woman is left a widow, does she get any of his social security monthly payments? I now get $33.00 on my own. A. A widow is entitled to three fourths of the amount of her husband’s monthly payment. If she is entitled to a payment on her own earnings record, also, she does not receive both payments, she receives the higher amount of the two. Nesting Place OTIS AIR FORCE BASE, Mass.
