Solar Activity 1$ Greatest In Years United Freea International Worldwide radio communications slowly returned to normal today after 24 hours of disruption caused by a huge solar flare and accompanying electrical disturbances. < Hie solar activity was described by scientists as the greatest in many years. The solar flare resulted from an immense explosion of the sun's gases. The huge flare on the sun was observed early Tuesday in Europe and its effects were felt 30 hours later on earth. It was- the second such bombardment in the last 45 days and * Standards Bureau spokesman said its effects were expected to equal or exceed the record disturbance of Feb. 11, 1958. Gov. Crawford F. Parker ended a : brief political dispute late Wednes- i day by bluntly telling the head of! I the Indiana Farmers Union that; Hoosier farmers have the sole ; right to determine how they will j vote in a wheat referendum. ; • Barker’s advice to the farmers came in answer to criticism by State Auditor Albert Steinwedel and John C. Raber, president of the IFU. Raber, in an open letter to> Parker, said the IFU is striving for a “yes” vote in the nationIwide wheat referendum July 23 -and asked for Parker’s help as commissioner of agriculture. Raber pointed out that a “yes” vote would mean 28 to 30 million dollars to the general economy of Indiana. “Since the president vetoed the | new wheat bill, the referendum stands between our Indiana wheat farmers and financial destruction," Raber said. “If the refer endum results in a two-thirds ‘yes’ majority, wheat price supports will be $1.78 per bushel, or more in 1960. If there are more than one-third ‘no’ votes, wheat will sell for $1 or less.” Steinwedel, a Democrat and political foe of Parker, sided with Raber. He said Hoosier farmers require a “yes” vote to enjoy prosperity and called on Parker to declare himself in favor of the, IFU views. “If Mr. Steinwedel wants to tell the farmers of Indiana how they should vote upon the wheat referendum, that is his business,” Parker said. But he said the right to vote secretly on any issue “is a sacred right of American citizens.” Parker said that to tell farmers how to vote on the referendum "would infringe on their right of self-determination.” He said he was satisfied to let the referendum “stand on its own legs, trusting to the good judgment of Hoosier farmers to vote as they alone feel is best for their own interest.”
