Grifftih Forced To I Abandon Lake Swim CHICAGO (UPD — Joe Griffith Tuesday -night failed for the third time to swim across Lake Michigan. He gave up after 17 miles because his wife was ill. Griffith was pulled from the water after 13 hours and 15 minutes. He began the marathon —.in uni 1
(swim from Chicago to Michigan City, Ind., Tuesday morning. The former Marine’s wife, Phyllis, a nurse, became 111 while riding in an escort vessel. Observers in the escort boats requested a large quantity of sea sick pills shortly before Griffith was pulled from the water. Jim Moran, Chicago auto dealer who sponsored the swim, announced Griffith’s reason for giving up. Griffith covered 16 miles of the
37-mile course in the first 12 hours before encountering four to five foot swells. Griffith gave up after 17 miles and 12*4 hours on his first, attempt in 1957. Last year, he covered 36 miles but was led off course by two navigational errors during a heavy fog., Over 2.500 Dally Democrats an sold and delivered in Uecatui each day. ■ ... - ■ _ - -

Schoendienst Plans Return To Braves ST. LOUIS (UPD—Red Schoendienst, who fought a successful battle against tuberculosis, continued workouts today for his return to the Milwaukee Braves’ lineup Sept. 1. “I've been working out since the first of June and doing a little running,” Schoendienst said Tuesday, ”and 1 hope to start batting practice the beginning of August. I also have been throwing a ball around and it feels great.” Schoendienst was found to have tuberculosis last November and wa's admitted to Mt. St. Rose Hospital. In February he underwent surgery to have part of the diseased right lung removed. Dr. William A. Werner, Schoendienst’s physician, said the operation hastened recovery. “Red thinks September first is the date and I agree,” Werner said, “and next year he might be able to play all season.” “I’ll start by playing just a few innings and see how I feel,” Schoendienst said. “I don’t want to overdo it.” “I feel as though I can play - four more years, 100 or more games each season.” The 36-year-old second baseman said he would start swinging a bat with some minor league players here and possibly get the feel of County Stadium again. “I might do a litlte batting practice with some minor league players in Milwaukee in August while the Braves are on the road,” he said.
