Gary Steel Workers Resigned To Strike GARY, Ind. (UPD — The furnaces were banked, the pickets were out and the strike was on in this steel town. It looked like a holiday except for the frowns. The pickets, who hoisted their signs at 12:01 a.m., right on schedule today, went about their duties as if they’d rather be home. There were 50 of them at U. S. Steel’s big Gary Work and they were about as enthusiastic as mess sergeants , in a dress parade. ■ Some of their signs said: “We are 100 per cent Behind Dave.” This reference to Steelworkers President David J. McDonald went unchallenged. The workers seemed resigned to the situation. That resignation permeated I through the town, which was foundled by steel and which lives by steel. Irving Kallus, who owns a little! delicatessen coffee - distance from the picket lint , philosophied: “The| nation’s economy is a chain, and' if one of the links breaks, the whole | chain falls apart. The trouble is. I Gary is one of the biggest links.” Another businessman, Charles Gard, sales manager for an automobile company, «aid, “Strikes are like morning coming in Gary. Around Gary the people have gotten kind of used to them.” Andrew Yachko, 41, one of the strikers, had this in mind when he said “The older fellows won’t be bothered too much because they’ve been through this before and they knew enough to save up for a strike.” “I’d sure hate to be some of the younger fellows, though,” Yacko added. Orval J. Kincaid, sub - district director of the union, was asked if there were any plans for helping needy strikers. He said the union had a community service organization to supply funds to the neediest. But he refused to say how much money there was avail* able for that purpose. EIGHT Continued from page one Upon arrival at Decatur the group visited the unloading facilities at the Pennsylvania railroad siding, and the experimental feed mill before lunch. Afterward they visited the feed mill itself where concentrates and complete feeds are mixed, then visited the largest solvent plant in the country before going to the new office building for a conference on research on nutrition. They then yisited the research division and saw the experiments with poultry, livestock and pets underway there. Tuesday evening they met with company executives in Fort Wayne for a discussion of the egg problem in, New Jersey. They returned to New Jersey early this morning.
