Mother, Daughter ; Reunited Monday ' LOS ANGELES (UPI) — A ' mother and her newly - found daughter today began filling in the blanks of the last 29 years. They met Monday for the first time since 1930 in a joyous reunion that embraced four generations. At first the reunion be- ; tween Mrs. Ruby Shelton, 53, Las Vegas, Nev., and her daughter, • Mildred, 32, Los Angeles, now a • mother of two herself was ' strained. t Then they relaxed and began . telling each other what had hap--1 pened.- ; Up until last September, the . daughter, Mildred Debonis, thought a woman named Fran- < cine Reise was her mother. But - at that time, during a quarrel, • Mrs. Reise told Mildred: • “No wonder you don’t stick ■ with me. You’re not my daughter r anyhow.” Mrs. Debonis said she began t searching for her mother then. [ She cheeked county clerks in . where she was reared. j Finally she discovered Mrs. Do- . la Mae Todd, Oxnard, Calif., her aunt, though she did not know it . at the time. Mrs. Todd told Mil- . dred her mother was in Las r Vegas. i Mrs. Shelton said the Reises ; “spirited” Mildred away in 1930. ? The family was caring for her 3- . year-old daughter while she - worked in Kansas City, Kans , t Mrs. Shelton said. “I’ve always had hopes that I would see you again some day,” - Mrs. Shelton told her daughter. ’ “I tried my best to find you. Oh, - I’m so happy." STATE OF INDIANA • SSi ; COCNTY OF ADAMS 1 ROBERT D. WILLIAMSON VS. ! MARY J. Work Is Progressing On New Water Main Work is progressing on the water main across the St. Mary's river that will be independent of the river bridge, city engineer Ralph Roop said today. The job was staked off early last spring, but emergency after emergency arose, requiring immediate surveys, and delaying the water line. The project has nOW been given top priority, and it is hoped that final plans will be ready by the next city council meeting. The original stakes had all been knocked over, and the area was restaked last week. New points will have to be surveyed, and redrawn before the next council meeting. General Electric Net Income Gains Net income of the General Electric Co., in the second quarter ended June 30, climbed to $64,461,000, or 74 cents a share, bettering 1958’s total of $54,197,000, or 62 cents a share. The share price, however, matched the 1957 second period price. ' Net sales rose to $1,088,879,000 from $1,014,028,00 in like period of 1958. This figure also bettered the 1957 total by more than 16 million. In 1959’s first half, G.E.’s earnings of $117,239,000, or $1.34 a share, were 13 per cent above the first half of 1958, but slightly less than the 1957 figure of $1.47 a shhre. Net sales in 1959’s first half rose 4 per cent to $2,565,447,000 from the 1958 figure of $1,978,994,000. Only heavy equipments shipments declined in this period, following a pattern set for this second quarter. Ralph J. Cordiner, however, said orders are increasing and the outlook is brighter. Shipments of industrial components, atomic, electronic, and defense products, and consumer products maintained a steady improvement, he added. Explorers Meeting Held Last Evening Paul D. Habegger became an associate advisor for the Elks Explorer post 2062 at a post meeting Monday night. Habegger will assist the explorers in directing their activities, which center around a program of vocational, community service, outdoors, and social activities. For the next post meeting, the explorers will begirt to study radio, and a radio expert with a mobile unit will talk with them. Last month, the explorers were studying electronics, with John Kelley demonstrating some electronic equipment. Next on the activities list is a trip to Lake James later this summer for camping and swimming, and a record hop at Bledsoe's beach. At last night's post meeting, they also heard the report on their most recent activity, the hot dog stand at the sidewalk sale. The explorers sold 800 cups of Pepsi Cola (they had sold 400 cups by 3 p. m. that day, the amount they had expected to sell, and had sold all 800 cups by 10 p. m.) The profits amounted to $55, which will go into their activity fund. The hot dog stand work came right after a special July activity: a camping trip to Michigan, including a canoe trip on the Rifle river. Urges TV Fraud Be Exposed To Public ‘ NEW YORK (UPD—Dist. Atty. Frank S. Hogan urged a court Monday to make public a grand jury presentment exposing, “a national fraud” in the operation of television quiz shows. "The public has a right to know I the extent to which it has been duped and cheated ... there can be little doubt that the national resentment would lead to legislation and regulation designed to i prevent a recurrence or contniuai tion of such fraud,” Hogan said. He said the document also . would be valuable to “television itself” by presenting “facts enabling it to clean its own house.” Hogan’s argument was made in a 20-page brief presented to General Sessions Judge Mitchell D. Schweitzer, who impounded the presentment last month after the attorneys for producers of several quiz shows no longer on the air objected to it. • -Schweitzer had asked the dis- ■ trict attorney to present arguments, and said he would make a ruling in August. Hogan said it could be assumed the presentment exposes “a national fraud whereby television quiz shows have been coni stantly misrepresented to millions of citizens as honest tests, of the contestants’ knowledge and skill.” He said the “gigantic fraud and hoax” involved “a regular practice of informing ‘contestants’ whose lengthy presence on the show is deemed profitable, of the questions to be asked and. frequently, of providing the correct answers as well.” "Misrepresentation of the entertaniment offered is morally if not ■legally larceny by false pretenses ’ and constitutes a fraud emanating He said the grand jury deemed , the operation of the programs “a ’ large scale evil” and had asked ’ ’ that copies of its report be sent |to “certain official agencies, the ’; functions of which are relevant ;ito the conditions discovered.” 5 The court’s position in suppress- ’ ing the document has been supported by two bar associations, who agreed with the original objectors that a grand jury presentment, which offers no forum for rebuttal of its charges, can be returned only against public officials.
