Care Advised In Selection Os Roofing Choosing the roofing material for a house is an important decision for anyone, whether he’s an architect, a builder, or a home owner getting ready to reroof, says architect Roy S. Johnson of Tarrytown, N.Y. The right choice of a roofing material, says Johnson, . can mean an important cash savings, a contribution to the appearance of the house, and the security of knowing the roof will give good protection from all kinds of weather. Johnson, one of the Eastern seaboard’s leading designers of fine homes, says these are the things he looks for in a roofing material: 1. Ease of application. Some Proofing materials require special training, tools, and experience to apply. An example of a material that is easy to apply is asphalt shingles. Any qualified roofer can apply them skillfully and dependably without costly, wasted labor. 2. Color. Johnson says that although he prefers white of other subdued light-reflecting colors of asphalt shingles, deep or blended colors on the roof can enhance the appearance of many homes. ’. 3. Texture. A soft, textured appearance. without any harsh glare is an architectural “must" With Johnson. “Hard, gleaming surfaces are for office buildings and greenhouses, not homes.” . 4. Durability. A good roof, says Johnson, should last for years without giving any trouble, and should never rot, corrode, or dent. 5. Low cost. Tn building a new home or remodeling an old one, the cash savings in choosing a dependable long-lasting roofing material low in applied cost may permit the installation of such things as more appliances in the kitchen or another bathroom.

I J 11 w-w-v Ever wonder why Broadway stars apply makeup under the harsh glare of bare electric bulbs around their dressing table mirror? It’s because they’ll appear on stage under equally stark lighting from footlights and spotlights. The bare-bulb dressing room lights show them how they’ll look to the audience. The average woman never appears in a Broadway play, but she goes “on stage” every time she steps out in daylight, This is the reason most au-
Plumbing, Insulation, Wiring Examine ‘Hidden’ Parts Os House Before You Buy
Don’t make the mistake of taking the salesman’s “word for important structural details such as wiring, insulation, and plumbing when you buy a home. Instead, ask questions, then ask to be shown. If you don’t, you and your family may have to pay for your error in cash, discomfort, and inconvenience as long as you live in the house. Here’s an example of one mistake of this kind that is happening every day all over the country: Sam and Mary Househunter, who think they know what to look for in a home, are immediately satisfied when the builder tells them: “Oh, yes, it’s fully insulated. We’ll guarantee that. What Sam and Mary can’t know because they fail to investigate thoroughly is that their new house. has been “fully insulated" with only a sheet of foil in walls and ceilings or a minimum layer (1 or IM inches) of bulk insulation.

thorities on good grooming recommend that daytime makeup be applied under natural light. The ideal way to achieve this is with a window over the dressing table, such as the sliding window of ponderosa pine in the photograph. Windows in this and many other styles in ponderosa pine excellent for this purpose are available in stock from building material dealers. These come in units with sash and frame made at the factory to fit each other and can be installed at low cost.
For years they’ll blame hard winters, hot summers, and their i innocent heating system for I their discomfort and high fuel bills. i After all, Shivering Sam win , •say, “the house IS fully insu- : lated. They guaranteed it.” , If you want to avoid the i plight of Sam and Mary, it’s , wise to ask the builder how much insulation the house has, what kind it is, and where it’s ■ installed. For heating comfort and econ- , omy, and maximum summer i comfort without air conditioning, engineers recommend thick- • nesses of at least 4 inches of ' mineral, wool in ceilings, 3 ’ inches in walls, and 2or 3 inches t in floors over unheated areas - such as crawl spaces, garages, • and porches. A house that is to be air cons ditioned or heated electrically i needs 6 inches of mineral wool I in the ceiling, at least 3 inches in walls, and 2 or 3 inches in floors.
'Gingerbread* Fading Away California Builders Turning To Cleaner Lines in Homes
Although California houses have become known in recent years for their fancy “gingerbread” exterior decoration, there are signs that a change is slowly taking place. An occasional development is built of cleanhned, low, functional houses in which modern materials are used in a straightforward manner. An example df such a house is the one pictured here. Designed by Campbell & Wong, nationally known architectural firm, and built in San Jose by Perma-Bilt Homes, the house won an Award of Merit from House & Home magazine. It sold at $16,250 including land. There are two indoor living areas—a 16- by 21-foot living room and a 10- by 14-foot family room. The dining end of the living room is separated from the entry hall by a translucent plastic screen. The kitchen conveniently lies between the living and family rooms. It is situated so that the housewife in it can look through a wide door in the far end of the family room to watch children in the back yard. Wide roof overhangs shade * the house on sunny days. The roofing material is asphalt shingles, used by Campbell & Wong for the color variety available. Throughout the whole development, which included
Celebrates 25th Year FHA Helped U. S. Become Nation of Home Owners
• The Federal Housing Administration, which rounded out 25 years of service on June 27,1959, has been in the forefront of the remarkable advances American housing has made in the last quarter of a century, says FHA Commissioner Julian H. Zimmerman. Home ownership, once only a dream for many families, is now within the reach of most. FHA led the way in providing a na-tion-wide demonstration that a mortgage made for a long term and a high percentage of property value was the logical way to finance a home, and most homes are now financed that way. Here are some of the contributions FHA makes in serving the American public: • Emphasis on good planning and construction through minimum property standards so that the buyer may be assumed of getting good value for-his Noah Used Asphalt To Waterproof Ark In all the centuries since Noah caulked his ark with asphalt, science has been unable to produce a substance that waterproofs as well. As a result, modern man continues to use asphalt as a waterproofing material. A good example is asphalt shingles, the most popular material for protecting homes from harsh weather. Keep Tools Clean One of the best ways to keep garden tools clean is to rub them in a galvanized steel bucket filled with oily sand. Used crankcase oil can be used in the pail. The sand scours the blade and the oil keeps it from, rusting. LABS AIR CONDITIONED Air conditioning is now used in most testing laboratories of the world. BLOOMS LAST LONGER Cut flowers bloom longer in an air conditioned room.

Insulation Is Important For Summer Comfort * Proper insulation is just as important to family comfort and welfare in summer as it is in winter. This is because duality insulation such as mineral wool stops heat from outside during the warmer months just as it keeps heat inside in the cold seasons. Insulation First Step When Converting Attic The first step in converting an attic to more living space should be insulating. This can be a “do-it-yourself” project for the whole ■ family, since thick batts or blankets of mineral wool are available from building material Sind are easy to install. -I —- - ._ - ■ ■ \ *
