there was the glory of breaking into the majors. Then there was the joy of working with a man named Leo Durocher who boassed him. coddled him and brought out all the qualities which made Willie a star in the big league heavens. Then It all fell apart for Willie. Durocher left the team and Bill Rigney, who took over as manager, announced that there would be “no favorites.” He named no one. But it was a barbed remark

1954. It was a frenzied, fabulous year in which every day was Sunday with chicken gravy. He batted a league-leading .345 and the following season won home run honors with 51. Then Durocher left and Willie had a, bad year. There was a comeback to .333 in 1957 and—after the trek west—he encountered’ frequent bad slumps in 1958. This year his slumps have been even worse and Willie was hitting only .311 when
he walked into Forbes Fiedl Tuesday for the 26th annual All-Star game. Towering Shot Wins Game But in the eighth inning, with the score all jammed up at 4-4, and cocky Whitey Ford of the Yankees on the mound, he sent a towerihg shot into deep right center field with Hank Aaron jittering on first. “I thought they were going to catch it,” he said, “but it kept hooking away from them.”
It fell in for a triple, chasing! Aaron home with the run which won the game, and etching the smile deep on Willie’s happy face. "Man,” he giggled in that squeaky voice, “it sure felt good to finally get hold of one. I guesz youd have to say that this is one of my biggest baseball thrills.” It wes the kind of thing which always seemed to happen to him in those early days when life was a perpetual picnic; days like in • 1951 when he came out of no-
I where to aid in the pennant drive of the ‘‘miracle’’ Giants; when he made those fabulous catches in the outfield, always losing his cap in the process, and every moment was a joy greeted with a piano key smile. Over in the other locker room, Ford, the little ‘‘ice man” of the Yankees, paid tribute to the 28-year-old who had racked him up. ‘‘lt was a high, fast ball,” Whitey mused. “Do you know what he hits,”

somebody asked. “I know what he can hit. Whitey retorted. "But I don’t know what he can’t hit.” Mays grinned like a kid when he heard that. Remarks of this sort, and that shot he blasted into the far reaches of the outfield, sounded familiar. Sort oof like the old days. ; Baseball Schedule Pony League Tuesday—Berne at Monroe <6 p.m.).
