PROBE ~ Continued from page one search. “I want my little boy," she \ cried, “I want my little boy.v ; A doctor caught her gently and told her that her son was dead. ■ The thin voice of a child came , through the doors of the hospital emergerncy room — “I want wa- . ter, water, water.” Early today, under the glare of searchlights searchers stretched a long net across the Ogeechee River .10 miles downstream from ; the scene of the disaster to keep any bodies from drifting away. Skin .divers and boatmen started at the net and worked slowly upstream in a hunt for more victims. Eyewitness reports of the wreck and explosion differed widely. But most agreed that the 14 cars of the 124-car Seaboard Air Line freight plunged from the trestle before the two butane-filled cars exploded. "Everything in Flames” Conductor Ira Hines of Americus, Ga., was in the caboose at the time. There is a long curve just before the trestle, and Hines had made an inspection of the train by leaning out the caboose window as the rest at the cars rounded the curve. “I had just settled back after making the inspection when suddenly the emergency brakes went on,” he said. “I looked out and everything was in flames.” The caboose stayed on the trestle, and Hines stayed with it. But Flagman W. L. Kimble chose to jump for safety and was badly hurt. Julian Beasley, 21, his wife Reba, 20, and their daughter, Linda Jean, two months, were among the dead. Another two-year-old daughter survived, but a nephew, Jimmy Anderson, 15, was also killed. L. M. Nichols, 33, of West Savannah, was one of those who escaped. “When I saw the gas leak out, it looked just like a white ground fog,” he said. “I thought at first it might be ppsion, and I got my wife and kids out of there. the explosion came, and the whole river seemed to be burning.” Rural Youth Holds Party On Sunday Approximately 100 rural youth members, advisors, and guests from 10 counties met at the Arthur Koeneman farm in Preble township Sunday for an afternoon party, a chicken barbecue, and an evening square dance. Inspite of the hot day, the group played volleyball, badminton, softball, croquet, box hockey, shuffleboard, and other games during the afternoon party. Later in the afternoon the group dug into 40 barbecued chickens, with the understanding that this was an “all-you-can-eat” affair. The "Rockir. Rebels,” four high school seniors from Wells county, played for an evening square dance in the Koeneman barn. From Ossian and Lancaster schools, the "Rebels” were Keith Mcßride, mandolin; Bill Mcßride, drums; Steve Fenton, Spanish guitar, and Harold Senn, piano. Keith McBride, Steve Fenton, and Roger Koeneman called the square dance. Workers who helped with the barbecue were Mrs. Rudy Koeneman, Mrs. William Boerger, Mrs. Merle Kuhn, and Mrs. Arthur Koeneman. Mr. and Mrs. Kqhn and Mr. and Mrs. Boerger are among the rural youth’s Farm Bureau advisors. Rural youth and their guests came from these ten counties, in addition to Adams: Wells, Allen, DeKalb, Porter, Kosciusko, Jay, St. Joseph, Blackford, Wabash, and Marshall. The rural youth will have their regular business meeting July 9, and July 12, will be the group’s annual otrting, at Pok&gon state park.
