NOTES FROM AFTER THIRTY ■mnmßßmmmnonmm«mßmßßmMß«mmmßßmßßßeemmmßmH«mßmmMmorf By JACK HELLER LOVE IS BLIND, AND DEAF Strange as it seems,.quite a few cars stayed at the Decatur Drivein theater Thursday night through , the violent electrical storm, calmly watching the movie. The name, by the way, was “The Sound and the Fury.” SPLASH Dick Walters and Dave Heller have rather subtle senses of humor. The two seem to have a standing contest as to which one can out-deadpan the other. One day Dave, went into Dick’s Grill for a cup of coffee. Feeling things needed livened up a little, Dick brought Dave his change in a glass-of water. Dave drank the coffee, and then also feeling it was a little dead around the place, poured the water all over the counter, picked up his change and walked out. > - . ’ ■• - ■- "- 3 O 3O - KEEPING BUSY Got a real nice letter this week from Wayne Flora, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Flora, 428 Limberlost Trail, who is currently serving in the Air Force. Wayne has been quite active in AF track competition. Wayne started out by making the Whitman AFB team. He won the two-mile steeplechase and set a new record in the 2nd Air Force track and field meet, and also placed second in the mile. From these accomplishments, he was elevated to the Second’s allstar track team and placed in thre different events in one night in the SAC meet. He then went on with the SAC all-star team which clobbered the Air Material Command team, 146-28. Wayne also made “Airman of the Month” in January. A 1956 graduate of Decatur high school? Wayne was a member of the Yellow Jackets track team. Don’t know when he finds time to do his Air Force chores, but he’s getting around quite a bit with the track shoes. HAVE A CHEW It will probably come as a surprise to most people, but Charlie Kent has a nickname. He’s known as “Blackjack” among his Rockhound pals. It stems from a trip Mr. Kent made a few years back. Charlie was in the process of giving up the nicotine habit, and to soothe his jangled nerved when the urge popped up, he would chew a certain brand of gum. His friends on the trip got so used to seeing the local real estate man slipping the gum in his mouth that they just named him after it. Name or no name, though, one has to admire Charlie's will power. Having tried to break thehabit on several occasions, it's not very easy to do. SO LONG PETE Reading about the departure of Peter Friederici the other day brought to mind some remarks heard about this time last year, when Ken Eliasson was leaving. The Rotary club announced that they would sponsor the exchange student program another year, and some people said it was too bad, because whoever came in after Ken would have a hard time living up to the standards the fine young Swedish man had set. And yet, a year later, we’re just as sorry to see Peter go. He and Ken were different types of young men, but both have given Decatur some wonderful impressions. Now we might wonder if the third could possibly be as nice as the first two. Or maybe we can wonder if we didn't have ourselves rated a little too high. Could it

Recently, someone called up and gave Ray an address to check on an exposed toilet. Ray steeled’ himself for the assault on the offender, preparing his speel. He hadn’t paid too much attention to the address, but realized as he gave it a second look, that it was somewhere across the street from the court house.
