School Daze Os the 710 high schools which played in the recent state basketball tourney, only 28.45% had more than 270 pupils. Yet the General Assembly has established an enrollment of 270 pupils as a pre-requisite to advancements from either the Veterans Memorial School Construction Fond or the common school fund. The purpose of discouraging small high schools is to form a school unit that is economical. When schools were first started in Indiana 100 years ago, they had to be located conveniently for the pupils. This was the first consideration. They were built of logs, usually by the people in the township, and were not costly. Today pupils may come to school from miles away with no trouble. Good roads, automobiles, and buses make this possible. The big problem today is the expense of education. Hundreds of items for classes not dreamed of 100 years ago are necessary. Health is a major consideration, while 100 years ago it was not considered at all—reading by firelight of small print was encouraged. Today print is large, making books more expensive; modern lighting is used for schools. No longer are students of all grades cramped into one room. Each grade has a room of its own for more particular studies. But the law still remains fundamentally the same as 100 years ago. The buying unit for a school is still the school corporation, or the township school. Usually this means that buying is not done in wholesale quantities, with the advantage going to the taxpayer; it is done piecemeal, with the advantage completely lost. School reorganization should be carefully considered. It is most important to the pupil. Are young men and women being given the very best advantages of education? Or are they just being "kept” until they are graduated? Is the most being received from the tax dollar? As taxes grow and grow, individuals must start examining the basic expenses to make certain that money is not being spent in useless and expensive duplication of overhead, staff; and equipment. — - Os course we want the very best for all our children. But this means long hours of planning to figure out what is the best.. A number of very complete studies have been made on school district reorganization, and the savings resulting therefrom. These should be kept in mind when school reorganization is planned. '

Busy Schedule For Queen And Prince f ST. JO H N'S Newfoundland (UPD—Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philips faced a busy schedule today that included a 500-mile trip across Newfoundland by plane and automobile. The royal couple flew to Newfoundland by Comet jet airliner Thursday to start a 15,000-mile, 45-day tour that will take them as far north as the Yukon and south to Chicago. They started today’s itinerary with a sightseeing drive through this port city on the way to the Torbay airport where they were to board a plane for Gander, Newfoundland. The Queen was scheduled toopen ji multi-million-dollar international air terminal at Gander. The royal couple arrived at Torbay Thursday under cloudless skies in a blaze of sunshine which broke up fog that had threatened to wreck plans for the start of the tour and nearly diverted the Comet jet to the U.S. naval base at Argentia, 90 miles away.

COURT NEWS Marriage Application Robert D. Weaver. 42, of Cleveland, 0.. and Mary Louise Weaver, 32, Cleveland, 0. Petition For License In the case of Francis J. Schmitt vs. Severin H. Schurger, etal, the plaintiff's petition for a restricted driver’s license was disallowed in Adams circuit court Thursday t when the judge ruled that the plaintiff failed to prove undue hardship to his family or dependents. The plaintiff was also ordered to pay court costs. After hearing the plaintiff’s testimony. the judge overruled a defense motion to dismiss the action on grounds that the court had no juridiction in the matter. In accordance with act 321 of the Indiana general assembly, the court denied the petition because the plaintiff has no family which is dependent on his support. The request for a restricted license must be accompanied by proof that undue hardship is exerted on family and dependents, not only the person in question. The court ’ also registered a special finding of facts and conclusion of law in the trial. Real Estate Transfers Grace F. Moser to George J. Geyer etux, inlot 25 in Monroe.
