Belter Appetites, Better Sleep, Better Dispositions Air Conditioning Helps Improve Family Health

After Five Years: ‘Village’ Folk Tell Benefits Os Cool Home How do families feel about home cooling after they’ve lived in an air-conditioned house for five years? A good place to find out is in the Air Conditioned Village, Austin, Tex., a group of 22 houses built under sponsorship of the National Association of Home Builders specifically to discover" the best and most economical way to build an airconditioned house. Here are some comments collected at random recently from owners of the houses: “The best answer I can give to that is that I’m certain we couldn’t live today without air conditioning,” says a young architect with two children. “Now we enjoy our summers here in Austin, while before we suffered through them, waiting for fall.” “We never want to go anywhere during the summer any more,” says the wife of an Air Force officer. “It’s much too comfortable at home.” A young mother of four raved: "Oh, we just couldn’t live anywhere again without air conditioning. We sleep better, eat better, and feel better all summer.” The parents of three teenagers said: “Air conditioning makes our Texas summers more livable. but even more important is the fact that the kids stay home more often and we get to see more of them.” In all, eight families were interviewed for their “five-years-later” comments. The only dissenting voice came from a man who thought his cooling unit was “too noisy.” Economy was brought up almost as much as comfort and better health. Among the families who kept records of utility bills ter the operation of both heating and cooling equipment, the average year-round heating and cooling costs was slightly above $lO per month. In all of these cases, most of the credit for low operating costs was given to insulation. Most of the houses in the Air Conditioned Village were insulated with extra-thick mineral wool in ceilings and walls. This thick insulation permitted the use of smaller cooling units, which operate at less cost and which required a lower initial investment. A good illustration of the value of insulation was a joking comment by Mrs. William J. White, of the Air Conditioned Village.’ “We don’t even need air conditioning,” she laughed. “The hpuse is so well insulated all we nave to do to keep cool is open the refrigerator door.”

motes its greatest benefit: better family health: 1. Air is washed, filtered, and dehumidified. Dust and its accompanying airborne bacteria are all but eliminated, resulting in fewer respiratory illnesses for everyone. 2. Appetites are heartier.

‘Brain’ Helps Figure* Needs For Cooling A “mechanical brain” is having an important influence today toward greater comfort and economy from residential airconditioning systems. The “brain,” or electronic computer, was developed by engineers of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. Its primary function is to determine exactly how large an air-conditioning unit is needed for year-round comfort in any house, regardless of location, orientation, shading, and conlife Training director Carl Cannon interprets electronic computer’s findings on air conditioning. struction. Within .24 seconds after data is fed in, the computer spews out an answer that might take months for engineers to find. _ xl _ Another important use for the computer is to solve the problem of what kind of house construction is best for the most economical air conditioning. The computer can quickly figure the importance to air conditioning of construction materials such as insulation. Tests withthe computer indicate that twthicker the insulation, the gape effective and economical fIU air conditioning .system. ’ Current recommendations of Insulation for economical air conditioning are 6 inches of mineral wool in the ceiling, at least 3 inches in walls, and 2 inches in floors over exposed areas. The computer, dubbed Warac to signify “Westinghouse Analog Recording Air Conditioning Computer,” is designed to consider systematically more than 50 factors which influence the indoor temperature of the house, Westinghouse officials predict that Warac will eventually do away with errors in estimating air conditioning needs—errors that lead to undersized units that provide insufficient cooling and oversized systems that are costly. Warac now is being used in training at the Westinghouse Air Conditioning Division in Staunton, Va. It is hoped that similar models eventually will become available for general use through air conditioning contractors and distributors. SICK KEEPING COOL Most new hospitals of the nation, especially those in the South, include complete air conditioning. COOL, MAN, COOL One ton of air-conditioning equals the cooling effect of the melting of one ton of ice in a 24-hour period. —-

Children especially eat better because they feel better, and. because their mother doesn’t mind cooking hot, nourishing meals in a comfortable kitchen. 3. Sleep is improved. Afternoon naps are easier for the younger set, and night-long sleep for all the family is more restful.

Operation Dollari Saved, Too (Scientific Orientation of House on Lot Cuts Cost of Air-Conditioning Equipment

' When a new, air-conditioned house is constructed, its builders can save hundreds of dollars on the cost of cooling equipment by placing the house properly on the lot. Dozens of scientific studies have, shown conclusively that proper orientation is one of the leading factors in low-cost air conditioning, both in original cost for equipment and in season-to-season operating expense. When used in conduction with thick mineral wool insulation, the right roof design and material, carefully - selected windbws, and shading in the right places, orientation may be the deciding factor in whether the home owner can or can’t afford air conditioning. Ideal orientation is rarely possible because of the contours, sizes, and shapes of lots, but here are some general recommendations for siting and construction. . 1. Broad sides of the house should face north and south. 2. Garage, porch or utility room should be on the west end of the house to take the brunt of the late afternoon sun. 3. The roof should have wide overhangs to provide shade for walls and windows, and should be constructed to permit adequate ventilation of air in the attic. White or light-color asphalt

Sculptress Works In Stainless Steel By GAY PAULEY UPI Women’s Editor NEW YORK (UPD-Gwen Lux is a girl carrying a torch —for art. • A sculptress who weighs just barely 120 pounds in coveralls, she works with tools usually associated with men and muscle. Her current specialty of sculpting in stainless steel calls for welder's helmet, acetylene torch, hammer, pliers, hacksaw and heavy leather gloves. "When I meet people at parties, they’re surprised to find I'm not a hefty female,” said the artist, a native of Birmingham, Mich. ‘'l’m more the Dior type than the Greenwich villager,” she said, and laughed. Our cameraman decided she had the voice and looks of June Allyson. The work has just won her the Municipal Art Soceity’s citation for "contribution to art in the city of New York.” \ “Vapor Trails” started on W sketching pad as do most qf her designs, the artist said. Research shows that a 6-inch thickness of mineral wool in the ceiling, at least 3 inches in walls, and 2 inches in exposed floors cuts the heat gain in a house so much that smaller, less-costly cooling equipment can be used.
